Car safety projectiles

I've just learned how dangerous loose items ex. Cell phone, cups can be in the car. DH has a station wagon with lots of loose stuff in the back, like jumper cables, salt, rope, an atlas, etc. We also like to put shopping bags in the wagon, of course.

We figure that we should get some sort of container with a secure lid for the rear cargo area that can be secured to the two metal latches there. We're having trouble finding a suitable container. They're either too small we'd like to be able to put a week of groceries in it maybe somewhere around 30 to50 gallons or there's no easy way to secure them to the vehicle.

Anyone facing similar issues? Any suggestions?

What about using the plastic tubs? Can use peel and stick velcro if concerned about it moving; lid snaps on. Lots of size choices. Added bonus, water proof so of something spills inside or need to put wet clothes or towels inside, would be contained.

We were really hoping for something that could be secured more, we'll, securely than Velcro. We were hoping for something that could be tied down with the two latches. Otherwise, that'd be a great idea.

They make heavy duty Velcro! I saw it at home depot and Walmart.
