2nd Trimester

1 hour glucose test in 4 hours today

I am not worried about doing the test itself, but I am worried about the outcome. I have to drink 8oz of sugary liquid, and did not have to fast (I talked to the nurse yesterday to make sure). I am still worried the results will come back positive and that I will forever develop diabetes and so will my child. Is that what happens when someone is diagnosed with gestational diabetes?? I was obese before I got pregnant (5'7 and 217), and my dad developed diabetes in his late 50's. Does this guarantee or put me at higher risk for G.D.??? I just want my baby to be a healthy size at birth, have healthy blood/heart/organ function, and not ever develop diabetes as a child (or ever for that matter).

  • From what i understand about GD, it is purely that...gestational.  It goes away after your baby is born.  That isnt to say you want get diabetes in life, but i dont think the two are related.

  • I'm not sure if you dad having diabetes puts you at a higher risk or not, but my mom has type 2 diabetes and I wasn't dx with GD in either of my previous pg's (I'll be going for the test myself on Saturday morning).

  • It's random and beyond your control. Accept it, acknowledge your feelings and don't borrow trouble. If you fail the one hour it doesn't necessarily mean you have GD. Even if you fail the three hour it's not the end of the world.

Usually GD clears up immediately after LO arrives. I don't know why you think it dooms you to a life of diabetes?

Do what you are instructed to do, eat normally and breathe!

  • My sister was overweight with her pregnancy...got G.D., but it went away as soon as her daughter was born...you should be fine.

On another note....I'm considered overweight, and I did not have G.D. with my first pregnancy. You'll be fine

  • My mom and sister both have diabetes, and it tends to run rampant in my family.  I also have PCOS and am on the heavy side, which also puts me at risk.  However, I just did my 1 hour glucose test and passed :)  I was worried too...but so far so good! (We're at 21 weeks tomorrow).

Dx with PCOS in 2004; TTC #1 since 2006. 6 failed rounds of Clomid, 1 failed round of injectibles, innumerable failed cycles of herbs, accupuncture, etc. FINALLY got BFP on 10/4/2012 after 2 rounds of Femara Can't wait to be a mommy! Pregnancy Ticker
  • It's completely random - no rhyme or reason to it. I had it with my second pregnancy, did not have it with my first (not sure about this one).

Gestational Diabetes goes away the very second the baby is born - it does not make you a full-blown diabetic. However, it does up your risk of getting it later in life, so make sure you keep an eye on any symptoms that may develop in the future.

I started exercising more and watching my sugar intake, but that's normal stuff that anyone should be doing day to day, so I don't let it stress me out.

  • My sister had GD when she had her kids early 20s and now she's in her 50s and has not developed diabetes. We also have a family history of diabetes. You do have some risk factors but that doesn't mean you will develop diabetes or even GD. Just do what you can to stay healthy and you'll likely be just fine.

I understand, it's hard not to worry! Fx for a totally uneventful oral glucose tolerance test.
