Is it bad that I think it's ballsy to ask for an additional tip when the automatic gratuity has already been included? I don't blame the guy for not tipping extra but the wording was douchy.
He crossed out the automatic gratuity. And allegedly, the check was split into 3 separate bills to try to avoid paying the auto gratuity, even though the same guy paid for it all.

I agree, if there is an automatic gratuity already on the bill you don't need to add more to the tip.

You don't have to, but sometimes you might have an awesome server who really goes above and beyond and want to compensate them. I generally tip 20% when I go out. If automatic gratuity is 18% and the server was terrific, I may want to give a bit more.

But you do need to pay the automatic gratuity, which this pastor did not do.

Yes, he did.
No, he didn't. The bill before the auto gratuity was $34.93. He crossed out the auto gratuity and in the total field he wrote "$34.93" which was just for the food/drinks. So he gave ZERO tip.
I read an additional article on this (can't link now but will try to come back later and link it) that said that the group as a whole only paid about 30% of the auto-grat. So yeah, no.

I agree with this 100%. Most servers don't expect additional tips on there, but there are some occasions when I was a server when customers knew they had an auto-grat and still wanted to give more (to make 20% or just as an extra thanks or whatever.)
Fun fact: When I used to serve/bartend, Sunday mornings were my worst shifts tip-wise. Not a single Sunday went by when I didn't get ANY tip from at least one table of post church goers. They would always be sure to leave a "Know Jesus is Lord" pamphlet in the check presenter for my heathen working-on-a-Sunday asss. Even though I went to early services every Sunday, someone always assumed I needed Jesus in my life since I was working. Drove me crazy.
Also, I always follow the logic of "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's". Just because you tithe 10%, doesn't mean you owe less gratuity, taxes, or whatever. They are, Biblically, separate issues.
Jackass pastor.

I'm Jewish, not Christian, but I assume he's referring to the Old Testament law that 10% of your total income that you're supposed to set aside for charity. Like, poor people. Like untipped waiters. Not sure where he gets off saying he "gives" any money to G-d. What does that even mean.
So on top of being a jerk, sounds like this pastor never read his bible because he missed the entire point.

I hated working on Sunday for that very reason. I got in trouble several times for pointing out the fact that if they weren't shopping on a Sunday, I wouldn't have to work on a Sunday. Irritating double standard.

Many Christian churches interpret that law as you are required to give them that 10%. Poor people and waiters are apparently on their own.
Really?? Okay. Okay, so without sounding judgy toward Christian churches I can still maintain that Pastor Cheapskate sucks at reading comprehension because that 10% refers to your total income and is not at all comparable to a one-time 18% tip on a single paycheck. Unless he thought he was supposed to tip the waiter 18% of his total income, in which case I suppose he'd be right to feel indignant about it.
I agree. He may give 10%, but its his parishioners 10% that keeps him paid. What a douche.

Re: You make God sad, Pastor Cheapass
wait. Parties of 8 or more have an automatic tip.. And his total was only $35?
...Oh. Assuming that was "his bill" from the group. Like a separated tab...
Yeah, that guy sucks.
He crossed out the automatic gratuity. And allegedly, the check was split into 3 separate bills to try to avoid paying the auto gratuity, even though the same guy paid for it all.
If it's real, it's definitely douche-y.
I bet it was just drinks. And I bet they wanted refills on those drinks and took up multiple tables.

The beast almost always tips. It just has a serious deduction system. If you bring 3 ranch instead of 4 you will lose money but only a percentage.
::something snarky about how I don't give 10% to any god and tip well here::
