Baby Names

Weird & wonderful ...

Okay, so before I get into the names ... I'm aware that one of them is weirder than the other. But, just work with me here. My husband and I have always loved the name Wednesday for a girl [yes, like The Addams Family] so we're 90% certain. But you know how pregnancy brain goes ... I'm flirting with another name now. We also like Winifred. Either way, baby girl will be called Winnie, so we're just working on getting the whole thing down.

Winifred is less feminine to me, but still cute and strong. Wednesday is so unique and unused, but there is still a precedent [Nicole Kidman has a girl named Sunday and Tuesday Weld was a famous actress in the 70s] so, I'm not worried that it is too off the wall.

If you like neither of the names, feel free to move along past this post. But I'd like to hear from some other offbeat mamas that may like unique names. Which do you prefer?

Wednesday Evangeline Octavia

or

Winifred Evangeline Octavia

Re: Weird & wonderful ...

  • I like both of these names!  I think I prefer "Wednesday," but I have a hard time getting "Winnie" out of it.

    Some thoughts:

    1. What was "Winnie Cooper's" character's whole name on The Wonder Years?  I'm assuming Winifred, but I dunno... Hearing "Winnie" always makes me smile because of that show.

    2. Winifred is very "Once Upon A Mattress." That show is the only place I've heard the name Winifred.  It's short for "Winifred the Woebegone."

Are you familiar the song with "I'm in Love with a Girl Named Fred?" You may wanna call her "Winnie," but her friends may tag her "Fred."

    3. I would also find it hard to resist serenading anyone named "Wednesday" with Lisa Loeb's "Waitin' for Wednesday." ;)

Im not sure how you get the nickname Winnie (which I love) from Wednesday.

FWIW, I have a family friend named Friday and it totally suits her.

If you want the NN Winnie-- have you considered Winter?

  • I like Wednesday. It may be a pain to learn how to spell for her (Hopefully not for the general public!!), but I think it's cute.

  • I prefer Wednesday. I agree that the -fred makes Winifred feel less feminine.

I wanted to note, though, that Wednesday is actually slightly more common in the US than Winifred. I mean, they're basically tied (32 Wednesdays born in 2011, 30 Winifreds), but Wednesday has a slight edge. Wednesday was also more popular in 2010 (28 vs. 22).

ETA: Though, I suppose Winifred gets a boost from alternate spellings (8 Winnifreds). As far as I know, no one has used alternate spellings for Wednesday (thank goodness!).

  • I like the idea of the name Wednesday because it's cool and unique, but when you wrote it down in your post with the middle name, it's just doesn't look "name" to me.  And I don't get Winnie out of Wednesday (and I love Winnie).

I've always liked Winifred, though.  I also love Wilhelmina, but that doesn't produce Winnie either.  I like PP's suggestion of Winter.  Winter is a GP name for me.

  • I like Wednesday and would go with the name you loved before you were pregnant.  I always start doubting the name but in the end, end up using the name I loved from the beginning.  Darn pregnancy brain.

I agree that I like Wednesday but don't see "Winnie" as a NN from it. If you are set on the nn Winnie I really like this persons suggestion of Winter.  That's awesome!  There are enough "Autumns" out there, why not a winter?

I much prefer Wednesday to Winnifred, but I also like some of these suggestions to get Winnie (especially Winter, Rowena, and Gwendolyn).

  • Oh, man. Y'all are awesome! I'm on BabyBump and everyone is naming their baby Jayden and think I'm a weirdo for even considering Wednesday! [sorry, that sounds mean]

I didn't realise that Winnie doesn't really come from Wednesday, because when you say Wednesday it sounds like Wenzday or Winzday [if you're from the deep south like I am] so just the first part Win could be Winnie. But you're all correct in that it does not technically go as a nickname. But Jack is a nn for John and there are other odd ones, too.So we may still go with it. [any other nn suggestions?]

That being said ... I really appreciate the feedback! I'll try and reply individually [I'm new to this forum, so I don't know if you get notified if I comment generally like this.]

I'm surprised and love that so many of you actually like Wednesday! Still a hard decision and I hope to put your advice to good use.

  • Thank you for this! I don't mind the Loeb reference, I've never seen Once Upon A Mattress [sounds like porn, but I know it isn't].

Let me know if you have any suggestions for a nickname for Wednesday!

Her name was Gwendolyn! And yes, I like that reference!

OP, I personally like Wednesday better. It's cute and fun, and Winifred just feels too old lady for me (and not in a good way). You don't get Winnie directly from the spelling of Wednesday, but it makes perfect sense to me. Go with your instincts! Smile

I really like Winter, but I've seen it a lot recently. And it doesn't suit us as well, I don't think. Friday is so cute, that's cool that you know one!

I love Edwina, Gwendolyn ... maybe all of those! But I can't handle letting another name in at this point. Haha. Olwen! Man, I love that. Stop!

    I appreciate the input, though.

My car's name is Wilhelmina! Haha. She's a VW Bug, perfect German name! I'm glad you like Wednesday, I'm still working on nicknames. Winnie is just so easy, even though it isn't a true nickname, technically.

Thanks so much for your input!

  • I like Wednesday and I really don't like Winifred. I like Winnie as a nn. Wednesday is pronounced "Winsday" so Winnie makes sense to me.

I definitely say "winsday" ... may just be my southern accent. But Wens or Winnie seem to be natural nicknames. Thanks for your feedback!

  • I prefer Wednesday. I think it has a sweet playful tone while Winifred seems a bit stuffy to me. I can totally see "Winnie" coming from it as a nickname. Stick with your gut, girl! Just think if you will regret not using it someday.

Thank you! I like the "go with your gut" comments. I would hate to have regret! It's just funny telling my family members the name we have picked out. haha. It is always a "whoa!" or "huh?" but they'll get used to it.

  • Winifred is too..elderly sounding for me. I don't visualize a baby, child, teen, or adult, just an elderly lady.

I adore Wednesday though, its delightful.

I don't get 'Winnie' as NN from Wednesday either though; Nessie is an adorable NN that I do see. :

  • I actually love them both!

Wednesday definitely makes me think of Wednesday Addams (but that's not a bad thing), and Winifred reminds me of "Fred" from the TV series, Angel.

I think Wednesday feels a lot less formal than Winnifred, but I think that's a personal choice thing. I tend to favor serious names with a playful nickname, so if it were me, I'd lean toward Winifred, but I still like them both.

Ha! This might be my favorite comment. I like that you admit you like one over the other although both might not be your style. Thanks for your input!
