Cerclage... Scared!

I am having a cerclage on Friday and am nervous and scared... Has anyone had one before? I am worried that what if it rips my cervix or something and I'm not able to have more kids and I am worried about the risks... Does anyone have experience with one? Is it painful afterward? Help!

Re: Cerclage... Scared!

  • I would ask this on the PgAL board. I know for certain there are ladies there that have them!

  • I've actually assisted in about 4-5 cerclage procedures when I was a student and followed the management of alot of patients that had this done.  It's a pretty quick procedure and it's an easy process.  It is painful afterwards, but so is any surgery.  I'm sure your doc explained the details so I'll skip that part (unless you wanted to know).

Afterwards, they might have you take progesterone injections once a week for the rest of the pregnancy.  You also will have to be on bed rest after.

I have heard of complications that involve the cerclage (not the cervix itself) rupturing or the vaginal vault which can still lead to pre-term labor but these instances were in really non-compliant patients who continued to do their normal daily activities and not stay on bed rest.

They also monitor the baby during the procedure.  Hope this helps some. :)

  • I'm sorry I don't have experience.  But I just wanted to wish you good luck.  Also, I think there are some women on the high risk board who may be able to answer your questions.

  • I'm scared for you:(  I am going to be monitored for a cerclage due to being pregnant with twins. I get very, very anxious over things like that, so it has been my number one fear so far.  I'm sure it is worse in my head than real life.

  • I know a lot of women who have had cerclages put in. Currently 3 of them are pregnant again after having one in their previous pregnancy.
