Hi, everyone! This is a little later in the day than I normally like to do the check-in thread, but better late than never (also my standard response to people who ask why I am delivering my first at 42). I guess the big news this week at Casa Danuli is that I finally confirmed the existence of the Secret Midwife Cave. My hospital tour way back in October just said they had two rooms with tubs. We did not see either one. Then in November, one of the doula candidates said she'd heard there was a special tub room just for patients with midwives and that it was an epi-free zone. My MW in January said she'd heard something about a midwives' suite, but she thought it meant they finally fixed Tub #2 (it had apparently been out of order for some time). The last straw came at prenatal yoga last night, when the woman next to me said, "Yes, it exists, I've seen it. It's very nice. You can even do water births there!" I HAD to get to the bottom of this. I finally got someone at the hospital to return my calls today, and voila: apparently a bunch of MWs got together and re-designed the broken tub room, and the room was completely re-done. It opened less than two months ago. It has no room number: you have to ask for it as "the midwife tub room." The room is reserved for midwives and their patients who want a natural birth, and yes, you can even deliver in the tub if you want to. The cardiologist I am seeing tomorrow is right in the next building, so after my appointment, I am going to stop by and see if I can take a peek at the Secret Midwife Cave. I am so stoked!!
Three quick shoutouts: Cali3674 made a nice introduction at the end of last week's check-in thread. You might want to mosey over and have a gander at it.
Good luck to kat1221 who is having a RCS on Thursday! FX for a great delivery and quick recovery!
We also have a January addition to our births list (see below) from Reb562, whoo-hoo!

Re: PG>35 Weekly Check-In: Secret Midwife Cave Edition
That is so cool about your midwife cave
As far as water birth or birth at home, neither of those appeal to me. I like things as simple as possible and (in my mind) the comfort and security of medical staff being close by. In my mind the squatting position makes most sense with gravity having a heavy assist. But, the reality is- I'm pretty conventional and will have an epidural etc
Updates
30 weeks and time is just slipping away. Nesting is in overdrive. In the last month I have gutted and reorganized every room and closet in my house. Appt this Fri for regular checkup. Next one in 2 weeks will have another u/s.
Hi! We are going back to MFM Thursday to check on my placenta previa. Hopefully, it has moved and I can get off pelvic rest. I have unfulfilled needs. Also, I'm going to ask that they double check that Nugget is still a girl. Now that I'm buying pink things, I'm starting to worry that they were wrong.
QOTW: I would not be comfortable with a home birth. I might consider spending some time laboring in water.

Great to hear you have natural options!
Nope, no home birth or water birth for me. After 3 natural hospital deliveries, I value the specific environment the hospital provides for childbirth.
Updates for me: I made it to my 30 week appointment today without dilation! Both my last pregnancies I was dilated and preterm labor by 29 weeks. So the P17 shots and modified bedrest worked, unfortunately its back to work for me today. We also moved into our new home last weekend, so I finally get to start my baby room!
Vents...I feel horrible! tight belly, burning hips from the P17, restless legs, horrible hormones. Pregnant after 35 is so different from being 25! My MIL is so busy working she hasn't sent out the invites for my baby shower...I'm a little stressed because I know some family have a hard time planning around work and I would hate for them to miss it as this will be DH only child. I also delivered 3 and 5 weeks early before, so we can't really push the date much without risking not having one at all!
Welcome to all of the new BFPs! Good luck on the countdown for us 3rd trimester ladies
Hi there,
I'd love to join your over 35 weekly check-in list. Here's my info:
your screen name: goatgirlnyc
due date: August 20, 2013 - 11 weeks tomorrow - First Pregnancy
sex of baby (if known, or will it be a surprise?) - Don't know yet but will definitely find out as soon as I can
I'm in the airport waiting to return home after a visit to a friend who just had her second son. We were there four days and I took lots of notes on their nursery set up, baby stuff, routine, etc. very helpful! And thankfully seeing their life made us even more excited for our little one, despite the obvious exhaustion and challenges.
I'm still struggling with daily exhaustion, which is my most debilitating symptom. Headaches, constipation... Piece of cake. :
So excited for you to find your Midwife Cave, it sounds like an exclusive club!
I am officially full term! Yeah! I have my 37 wk Ob appt tomorrow and a NST. Hoping to hear I'm progressing to the end as I'm uncomfortable as hell! Still haven't had any BH or contractions. MP is still in place, but LO has dropped and is head down. I'm really hoping to hear that I'm going to be induced. Tired of taking insulin and tired of playing the waiting game. On the Feb board there have been so many babies already and I'm so jealous!
QOTW: I would consider a home birth, but not now that I'm older. If I were younger, though, I would totally consider it. Especially since I live literally 1 mile away from my hospital. So if anything happened, I would be able to get to the medical facility and staff very quickly. My classmate had her 4th birth at home (and maybe also her 3rd), but then had to go in afterwards because her bleeding was a little too heavy for her MW's comfort...
Vents/Updates: Tomorrow, we have our 2nd 20 week U/S (at this point, we're 22 weeks) to see if baby will cooperate and we'll get better pics of the heart. Now that we also know about the 2 vessel umbilical cord, I will be relieved to confirm that my P?pite's heart is all good. Still waiting to hear about a PT referral so I can get my braces for the carpal tunnel. I am loving that I can really feel the baby kicking and hitting me-- I said I wanted more magic and I'm getting it! Tomorrow, we start some renovations to make room for the baby's stuff. Starting to get more and more real!
My Ovulation Chart
I have been having contractions all day. It looks like I will having a baby soon.
Tomorrow I will be 42 weeks.
BTW chance_encounters had her baby. She posted it on the January 2013 board.
Birth is safe as life gets - Harriette Hartigan
First thanks for the welcome.
Good luck mangomama. Hope everything goes smoothly.
Woohoo for the midwife cave!
QOTW: I would love to have a home birth and/or a water birth preferably at home but DH said no. We are a bit of a drive from the nearest medical facility and it is no longer really equipped to deal with a birth emergency. Since I am having a VBAC and all of our babies have needed a bit of assistance taking that first breath we are opting for a hospital birth again. This time hopefully I will have the chance to try laboring in the tub but my hospital does not do water birth. I am making peace with this reality.
Updates: Fatigue is kicking my behind. This pregnancy thing is way different at 38 than it was at 22, 26 or even 30. Also tangled with worse nausea this weekend though thankfully no vomiting. We had a busy weekend. Saturday was a basketball game at our local university (Go OSU Beavers!) and Sunday we drove to Seattle and back to visit my mil who is living up there now and undergoing treatment for brain cancer. We also visited my sil and her family who also live up there. Sunday was a very, very long day. Left home at about 7:30 am Sunday and returned at around 2 am "Monday". Today was a long day at work and I only work 1/2 time. We told my parents on Saturday and my inlaws on Sunday. I am not sure my mil will remember why she has the ultrasound picture in her room as her mental capabilities are very clearly diminished after fighting this cancer for more than a year. The week ahead will continue to be busy as my oldest has her first equestrian meet of the year and my middle has a swim meet. At 10 weeks I am at that stage where if it weren't for the nausea and fatigue, I could forget I was pregnant so there is not much to report there.
Have a great week everyone.
So cool about the secret room!
QOTW: I think I am too chicken to consider a home birth, but the water birth sounds like a nice option, our hospital has tubs for use while in labor I believe.
Updates: NT scan is on Friday, I am so nervous!
BFP 12/13/12 EDD 8/22/13 Lilah Ruby born 8/8/13
The midwife cave sounds amazing for you!
QOTW: I like the idea of a water birth but I am too nervous about birth to even consider it. Even if I did go natural I would want to be in a hospital. I have come to terms with doing this the most painless way possible .
Updates: My appt. last week was good. My blood pressure was a little high the month before so I was nervous about that but it turned out to be perfectly normal thank goodness. I am now on ob appts. every two weeks. My vent is the number of ultrasounds I will be having though. Since I'm "old" I have to do growth every 3 weeks starting at 32w and BPPs (biophysical profiles) twice a week starting at 36w. So I think I scheduled 11 ultrasounds. Doing those along with my ob appointments, I am going to be so sick of going to the doctor. I'm happy that I will know right away if there is a problem though so I guess I shouldn't complain.

RCS scheduled for Thursday! Can't wait but also a little nervous. My mom got into town last night to help out and I am so glad she is here. I am tres uncomfortable!
QOTW: Oh heck no. I am getting the epidural at the first possible moment. My OB loved my birth plan. The only thing that I cared about was an epidural and I am flexible on everything else.
Updates: My BP is under complete control. It is such a relief. I do have a grade 3 placenta so I will still need to deliver early. DH asked the OB if we could wait another week to have the baby and induce at 38 weeks rather than 37. He said that he would consider it but it seems unlikely. I did not think that anyone was going to throw me a baby shower since my family can't do it. I am getting 3 here and then the meet the baby party at home. I had my work shower already and it was amazing. DH's work is having one for me on Friday. My friends are having one on the 10th. I feel so lucky to have so much support.
QOTW: Honestly, I'm still petrified of the birth process so I wouldn't be comfortable at home. Also, I really haven't looked into many birth options, does anyone have any recommended reading on it? Our hospital does have tubs in each room that you can use.
Updates: Not too much new, but still really tired. Was hoping to have an energy burst in 2nd tri, but it seems to be passing me up so far. Starting to really feel that we need to get doing some baby planning, we haven't done a thing yet!
Danuli - Way to keep with the questions and find out about the secret cave!
Cali - Sorry to hear about your MIL's struggle with cancer. We went through cancer with my father for 3.5 years and its really hard.
CountryGirl - Happy to hear the blood pressure is under control! Hooray!
~~~BFP 10/9/12, EDD 6/17/13~~~
I have no interest in a home birth or a water birth. My hospital does offer laboring tubs in each room, but I'm sure I'll be going the epidural route again. My DD's birth was very smooth and I'm hoping for a repeat.
Update: Not much. I've started feeling well enough to exercise again. I really enjoy swimming laps and I think it's helping me sleep a lot better. I have an appt tomorrow with my OB so I'm hoping to hear all is well.
Best of luck on Thursday, kat1221!
I am not sick of going to the doctor even though I thought that I would be at this point. I love my weekly BPP's and the chance to get another glimpse at her.
Expecting Boy/Girl Twins! My babies were born 4/23/13 at 36w1d!
QOTW: I have had two midwife assisted births in hospital and will do the same for this one. For me, I'm too nervous to deliver at home and want to be in a hospital in case its needed. As for water birth, it's not an option, but I'm a big fan of being in water prior to baby being born. Weith my first 2 I stayed home until about 8cm and spent most of that time in my jacuzzi tub, then time at the hospital in the shower......
Update: starting to feel more and more movement daily now which is fabulous and just waiting for anatomy scan next week!!!!
Karen - 36 DH - 39
Update: 9 weeks today and my symptoms are mostly very mild. Although I'm at a conference right now and my feet got so swollen yesterday that my whole body hurts today and I can barely move NT scan is scheduled for 2/21 as well as my 12 week check-up, so I probably won't have much to update until then.
QOTW: No, thank you. I want a hospital bed and an epidural.
Congrats on V-day!
QOTW: A couple of my friends had home births and while the idea sounds interesting and it was something I thought about briefly, I don't think my OCD husband would be on board...
Updates: At our last pediatric cardiology appointment, we found out that our baby's heart condition is not as severe as they thought, which means I can deliver at my local hospital instead of a bigger one and we can hold off on surgery until a few months after she's born instead of immediately after. And I don't have to find another OB this late in the game! It's the little things but we'll take all the good we can get.
That IS good news! That is going to reduce your stress levels quite a bit when it comes to L&D time, and then you'll have time to really bond with your baby before her surgery. I hope when they go in, they see it is even still less severe than they thought, and they can heal her as completely as possible.
Over-40 parents...what we lack in vigor, we make up for with cunning.
Happy V-Day! It seems like just yesterday you were anxiously waiting for that first u/s, and now here you are at V-Day! I hope your twins are good little beans and go head-down for you.
Over-40 parents...what we lack in vigor, we make up for with cunning.
