best baby shampoo/body wash (preservatives?)

hi there!

my LO is 3 months old and we are starting to bathe him more often. we currently use burts bees unscented shampoo/body wash. I noticed it has a preservative in it sodium benzoate. Is this ok? i found it in the honest company's product and earth mama angel baby.

thanks for your thoughts!

Re: best baby shampoo/body wash (preservatives?)

  • Although I haven't tried earth mama angel baby, the ingredients are excellent and many mamas here swear by them. I use Dr. Bronner's castille soap bar, Baby Mild Unscented. it has worked great for us.
  • I use EMAB and love it.  The shampoo/body wash smells so yummy!

It's pricy, but we're still on the first bottle,(8 months later!) and use it several times a week. (Some days we use plain water)

ETA: sorry... just noticed you mentioned EMAB in your post.  It's rated 0 on the EWG cosmetic database...but I have no information in regards to that specific ingredient.  You could look it up on there.

  • So, I am going to cheat and just give you the Wikipedia link on Sodium Benzoate:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_benzoate

There is some concern about Sodium Benzoate having carcinogenic properties due to its ability to react and form benzene.

Personally, I enjoy finding locally made soaps to use on my LO. There is a wonderful company in my area called Alchemy of Sol. They have a wonderful scent free, super moisturizing soap that I like using on my DS. See if you can find something similar, perhaps a local goat's milk soap to use.

OR check out Ava Anderson Non-toxic. This company is at the forefront of making non-toxic skin care products and has developed a basic baby care line. It is a little pricey, but read about the ingredients and you'll soon understand the time and research that has gone into the development of each of their products!

  • I am not a fan of using soap on a baby. Organic milk or cream is the best thing to cleanse a baby with. Just pour it right into their bathwater. It is mildly exfoliant, so removes dirt, but the fatty acids make it emollient so it softens baby's skin. Eliminates the need for lotion, too.

Ooh, I'm interested! So how much milk do you use? And wouldn't this give a sour milk smell later on? Or do you just rinse it off?

  • Since our toddler was born we have been using Lafe's Organic Foaming Baby Shampoo & Wash. The packaging is BPA & phthalate free and it only contains 4 ingredients (coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower & palm oil.  It is fantastic!!
