attn dental hygienist- I know I saw some others on here :)

How long do you plan on working? I am a FTM, and my office asked me how long I am going to work... Right now I feel like I will work until my belly is too big to reach my patients; but wanted some other thoughts

thanks

  • I actually felt really good all the way to the end, my due date was a Sunday. Expecting to go late, I just kept working. The Friday before my DD, we were at a checkup and my DH asked that the doc tell me to have that be my last day at work. I thought I'd have at least a week of relaxing at home before labor. I worked late getting everything done and off my desk. After getting home, bent down to get a pan out of the cabinet, my water broke. Baby was born Sunday early am , on her DD.

My point is you could feel great all the way to the end. They even say you get extra energy which I guess is to prep for labor. I used it to clean off my desk LOL!

  • My DD is Aug 3rd which is a Saturday and I am scheduling my patients up to the 2nd. All the girls at my office have been fine to work til the end of their pregnancy. We will just have to be mindful that its going to be easy to bump into people's heads with our bellies. I think I would go stir crazy at home waiting for labor to start and the less time you take prior to the birth, the more time you will get to take off afterward! I have been warning the patients that are scheduled within two weeks of my DD that anything can happen and not to be surprised if they get a call from our receptionist saying they will be seeing a fill-in hygienist!
  • Thank you! My due date is August 3rd as well. I am only taking off for 6 to 8 weeks because of money.

  • 8 weeks for me too...I just scheduled in two "pump blocks" per day for myself so if the breast feeding thing goes well, I can take a quick 20 min break to pump mid morning and mid afternoon, that way they can't schedule patients back to back and make me wait until lunch. Just a thought for you...
  • With my first I worked right up until I had the baby. With my second I used the 4 weeks ahead of time to spend with my 2 yr old before her brother came. I was never uncomfortable working and my belly never got in the way.
  • Thank you all for your responses! I appreciate it :)

  • There are a lot of us on this board : I am a FTM also an plan on working up until I go into labor. Our practice doesn't offer paid maternity leave anymore so I got AFLAC and will be taking 12 weeks off so I want to save that for after I actually deliver. Another hygienist who is pregnant with her 2nd is doing the same thing so you should be fine as long as you're comfortable.

I didn't even think about starting to block off time for pumping but now that I'm scheduling for August, I guess I should start!
