Baby Names

Braddock

DH threw this out the other day for a future son, and it's growing on me! His favorite movie is Cinderella Man, so I know it comes from the real-life boxer James J. Braddock. When I looked it up, I was surprised to find it's a legit name. I'd like to know your thoughts!

Also, is there any possibility that he would NOT be nicknamed Brad? It's not a deal breaker, but Brad is not my favorite.

Re: Braddock

  • I don't like it. I hear buttock and brat-ock!

  • I have a hard time pronouncing it when said out loud. I dont like it. It sounds clunky and awkward for a first name.
  • It being a last name doesn't bother me, as it's still a legitimate first name as well. But I was afraid of it being kind of clunky. And that's why you test the waters before you fall in love with a name! Smile
  • I like it! And I don't think he would have to be Brad. Braddock doesn't require a nn.

Thanks for validating...at least I'm not totally crazy! Wink

  • I don't like it at all. It sounds too harsh and clunky for a fn.

  • Well...it's a legitimate first name in the same way as names like Hudson, Sawyer, Parker, etc are. That is, a surname used as a first name.

I think it's bad as a first name and I also hear 'brat' when I say it.

Good point. I say it Brad-duck, otherwise I would have already ruled it out on that basis.

  • Our son is named Bradley...so I kind of like it but the ending is just too harsh for me, but if you like it than it's unique without being strange or made up. So far no one had nn our son Brad....thankfully. Not that I hate it but it's not his name IMO.

    Yes!!!

Reminds me of horse paddock and buttock...and it sounds like brad-*** when you say it. It's bad any way you look at it.
