Amnio at 38 weeks? (GD related)

Hi ladies,

I should probably post this also on the high risk board but I wanted to get myt fellow Feb mommies opinion first.  So I have GD and at my appt yesterday they said LO weighs 6.5 lbs now and that they rarely will let a GD patient go past 38 weeks.  My follow up appt is on Feb 7 and they want to do an amnio to check is lung development and they said if they look fully developed, they will likely induce that same week.  I didnt even know they did amnios this far in pregancy.  According to the nurse practitioner, she said an amnio at this stage doesnt have the same risk as doing an amnio for genetics at like 18 weeks.  She told me the risk now are that my water could break which she says wouldnt be a huge deal since I would be full term, however, an amnio still concerns me.  Does any one have any thoughts or opinions on this.  TIA

Re: Amnio at 38 weeks? (GD related)

  • I have GD and the plan was to induce at 38 weeks because of it..until today. I went in for my 37 week appt and my OB said she submitted the paperwork for the induction at 38 weeks and the hospital said no. They said they no longer induce before 39 weeks unless there's a serious health issue. All of my BPPs have been perfect so they aren't considering my GD to be a serious health issue at this point.

How have your BPPs been? I would be wary of doing an amnio unless it was absolutely necessary.

ETA: My little guy is estmated to be 9lbs already too..I was pretty bummed to find out the induction was moved back a week. Of course he could still come on his own.
  • I agree that an amnio this late would not hold the same risks as doing one earlier in the pregnancy, and it would definitely be beneficial to evaluate baby's lungs prior to induction. But I am not sure why they want to induce at 38 weeks. I have heard of people with GD not being allowed to go past your due date, but 38 weeks seems a touch early.

  • I can't weigh in on the gd issue, but the amnio risk at 38 weeks isn't the same as when you're early on in your pregnancy. The actual reason for the risk is the same (your water could possibly break), but of course at 38 weeks if that happened you would simply deliver a baby. The risk comes in if say the amnio results showed lungs were not developed enough to induce and then your water broke anyways due to the procedure.

  • I have GD and am on insulin for my fasting numbers.  I am not having an amnio and my OB never mentioned having one either (I just don't see the point at 38 weeks).

I did ask about an induction at 38 weeks (which was the norm a few years ago) and he said NO that unless medically necessary the hospital would not allow it prior to 39 weeks.  They have become very very strict with what defines "medically necessary."  And he said GD controlled by diet is not deemed as medically necessary these days.

  • Thanks ladies.  My BPPs and NSTs have been fine.  Im hoping to get more info from my OB at my next appt.  This talk to the amnio came from the nurse practitioner that he sent me to see so hopefully he will be able to clarify things.
