Canadian ladies

I've never been to Canada and it just occured to us that we're less than 5hrs away from Toronto and could do a weekend trip there instead of NYC.

What do you recommend doing if you're only there for a weekend? How do you find special deals? Do they accept American dollars? We have updated passports. Sorry if I sound dense. I thought it would be nice to ask for ideas before going.

Re: Canadian ladies

  • If you are here in the winter you can skate at Nathan Phillip square, take in a show or see a ballet (Im not sure whats here now), Science Centre is fun for kids, in the spring or when its warm the Toronto Zoo is really nice. The summer has the many festivals and events like Caribana, CNE, Fall time hasTIFF (Film Festival) and a arts night all around the city etc. Toronto Comic Con is in March! Toronto has some amazing restaurants. I have many recommendations there!

If you are able to go out for the night, the most fun I ever had there was at a bar called Clintons Tavern. They have a 60's dance party there every saturday. Its so much fun and such a happy atmosphere.

The city of Toronto website is what I have always used to see what I wanted to attend.

  • I live in toronto. It's a great city. You should try and hold off till the weathers better. Like pp said, the toronto.com website is great for up upcoming events. The zoo, wonderland, casa loma, the beaches are beautiful! Eaton centre or yorkdale for shopping. How old are your kids and what r u into?

And yes of course we take US dollars and you will need passports. :

  • Awesome! Thank you, ladies! I love the idea of ice skating even though I stink. Then we could warm up at a cafe. That 60s dance night would be a lot of fun too. We're going to try to go without DD who is 1.5 years and would probably freeze her butt off. If my parents agree to babysit it's going to be our first overnight trip without her. Big step right there, but I think we both need it.

I guess I'm looking for a cozy restaurant, not super fancy, just unique and dim lights would be a plus. We are on a budget, so that's why I'm planning ahead. A play would be nice, an art museum, cafes, and anything fun and relaxed. I'm going to see what prices I find to see if it comes out cheaper than going to see Wicked on Broadway in NYC. I'm leaning towards going to Toronto since I've never been. DH went over 10 years ago on a college trip, but he didn't do much.

  • I had dinner at the Courthouse Market Grille a couple of years ago, and it was amazing. It's in a renovated old courthouse with a big fireplace, so the atmosphere is cool and the food was fantastic. If you're looking for inexpensive lunches, the St. Lawrence Market has a bunch of different vendor stalls in a big building.

For plays, The Wizard of Oz is on right now, and it's gotten great reviews. There's also the Art Gallery of Ontario and the ROM.

  • Sweet! Thank you for all the links and suggestions. I find that googling restaurants makes it impossible to narrow it down because they all sound good on the websites.

  • You could go up the CN Tower andgo shopping at the Eaton center. If you're up for a drive, Niagra Falls is only 1.5 hours away.
