Cloth Diapering

How many covers?

Please forgive me if this is asked a lot.  I consider myself a pretty good lurker and I learn a lot, I am just blanking when it comes to the amount of covers I will need.

So - I know I need about 50 prefold dipes for twins and an every other day wash.  I'm pretty well loaded up on my registry with preemie prefolds and regular size 1 prefolds.  I have 9x 6packs of each on my registry. (54 of each size)

Between the Thristies Covers, Thirsties Duo Wraps (apix and snaps), Bummis Super Brites, and Bummis Original Wraps... I have 26 covers on my registry.  Part of me feels like this is far too many.  But there is also a little part of me that feels like this might be right on.

Any advice or thoughts?

Re: How many covers?

  • I think most people say around 6-8 covers per child.  Also, remember that most twins are born earlier than 40 weeks.  You'll want to lean toward smaller covers.

When you start doing laundry remember that you don't want to overload your washer.  Depending on the capacity of your washer, you probably only want to wash around 24 diapers at a time.  HE machines often take few diapers.

    Yeah this.

I mean, if you want to do 24 covers than I say rock on, but it is overkill for what you will need.

  • Thank you both.  I took some suggestions that I got here about smaller covers for preemies.

Once we determine the sexes of the babies, I will trim down the amount of covers to a much more reasonable amount.

    Thanks again!

  • I wash every other day and we can get away with 4 covers easily.  My son was a preemie and we used the Bummis covers because they were the only ones that started at 4 pounds.  I don't like the Bummis now and use other covers because I like them better.  My advice?  Register for a couple of each kind to see what works and ask for gift cards so you can buy more of what you like.  You might find that you need things down to road that you didn't anticipate or your needs could change. Another mom once told me (when my son was 4 months old and I though I had it covered that "she liked different types of [cloth] diapers for different stages."  She was totally right.
