Evening primrose oil

Just looking for your thoughts and experiences. I have read a lot of really great things including it helping to prevent perineal tarring. I am 38 w tomorrow I think of starting it. Orally and vaginally. Lets discuss.

Re: Evening primrose oil

  • started taking it this weekend (i hit 38 weeks on saturday). not because it induces labor (it doesn't) but rather because of how it can help things along with the cervix/vaginal canal when you do go into labor. my baby has a big ol' head so i'll take all the help i can get.

taking 1000mg 2x a day orally and doing a 500ml inserted vaginally at night.

i used it to assist in conception as well as it's supposed to help increase cervical mucous. no clue if it helped, but i did get pregnant the first cycle we tried so i'd like to think it did!

  • Somebody - was it DC2London? - posted a link to a study here not too long ago that showed EPO led to more favorable outcomes both in spontaneous and induced vaginal births (here, more favorable = no c/s) because it seemed to help soften the cervix and make it easier to dilate. I started taking it this week. Not that I want to go into labor now, but it doesn't cause labor to start, just seems to make it go a little easier when it does. I haven't seen anything about it linked to less perineal tearing, though. Does anyone have a study on that? I'm taking it orally. If you're using it vaginally, are you doing it as an oil that you rub in? Or like a vaginal suppository?

  • My OB recommended it as a suppository at 37 weeks (not that it causes labor but we wanna be careful!) which means I start tonight! :)

  • I started it at 37 weeks. I am up against the clock as my OB wants to induce at 39 weeks and I am hoping to either go into labor on my own or at the very least be "ready" when the induction starts. From what I understand it helps alot in softening the cervix and that should assist with a successful induction. I am starting it internally tonight. I started with 500mg 3 x a day orally last week.

  • I have taken 1000mg once a day orally for the past 34 days. Last night I used it for the first Time like a suppository. I pricked a hole in it and just stuck it up there. I wore panty liner just in case but it didn't seem like I needed it.

There was a study done in 2005 which indicates EPO helps improve skin elasticity thus helps prevent tearing.

Yep, this was the one I was talking about. Nothing about less tearing in that study, though. I'm irrationally scared of a 3+ degree tear...
