Sciatica on the first trimester?

Besides the lovely first tri symptoms of feeling completely hungover all day everyday I started having these cramps in the middle of my butt. Mostly the left side. Usually just have them at night, but have progressively gotten worse and moved to my tail bone and lower back. I asked my obg and he said it was sciatica and I should go see a chiropractor. WHAT??? Doesn't that happen when you're like 7-9 months pregnant? I was wondering if anyone in the community has had this issue and could share some tips. I found two yoga poses that help but definitely don't get rid of the pain completely (pigeon and child pose). I'm terrified that if the pain is so severe on my 10th week, by the 7th month I'll be in bed rest.

Re: Sciatica on the first trimester?

  • Nope, your ligaments start loosening immediately.  My sciatica was so bad when pregnant with DS that I could barely walk at 10 weeks.  I ended up on bedrest for other reasons for a few weeks, but I started with a physical therapist at 14 weeks and by 22 weeks I was mostly fine until 33 weeks when it got worse again.  Don't waste time with a chiropractor, a PT can give you exercises to help long term.

    2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • Look up the McKenzie method online. It's a series of stretches to help with sciatica.

  • Thank you both for sharing the info! Is the McKenzie method safe for pregnancy? I looked up stretches for sciatica (found mostly yoga poses), but some make the pain worse....so I was sticking to the two I mentioned. I'll definitely look into PT and read more about the McKenzie method. I'm just glad I'm not alone!
  • I believe so. I used it pre-pregnancy for lower back pain ( I have an extensive history of it). There were not any stretches that I think would be too difficult to do, especially at this stage.  some might be harder the further along you get.

  • I have it and its horrible! Some days it hurts to bear all of my weight on my left leg.
  • I'm so sorry MrsA...have you tried anything? Maybe you can also follow the advice on the thread.
