Babies: 0 - 3 Months

No paci = 8 hours of solid sleep!

My dd is 4 mo old and over the past 2 weeks grew attached to her pacifier.  I can not believe it...we took her paci away yesterday because of her constant night wakings and she slept 8 hours through the night! (Longest stretch has been 4 hours previously since her birth).  Naps are a killer for the past 2 days with me by her crib for atleast an hour of crying/holding/patting/etc.  I had not realized how dependant she was on it.  If you are thinking of going cold turkey on the old paci...I say go for it!

(Please note...I am NOT anti paci...loved it when she really needed it for the first 3 months!)

Re: No paci = 8 hours of solid sleep!

  • We spent 4 nights in a row holding the paci in her mouth for an hour, literally before she would keep it in, then putting it back in an hour later when she would wake up crying. Then she would wake up an hour later ready to eat, eat, then we would start the paci routine again. We decided to cold turkey the paci too at 4 weeks. She slept 4 hours straight without fussing. Last night she slept 6 hours straight. I'll still give her the paci every now and then when she is super fussy but take it away before I lay her down. It has worked wonders for us.

  • PLEASE HELP ME, I'M DESPERATE!  How do you get her to actually GO to sleep without it? My dd is soooo ridiculous that she will actually hold her little mouth open like a baby bird, waiting for the damn thing to be inserted! And then scream if it isn't!
  • Last week we just decided to take away the paci and turn off the sound machine cold turkey.  DS is almost 6 months old and was still waking up twice in the middle of the night and then was overtired and couldn't nap well during the day.  The first night was bad, but not as bad as myself and the baby being sleep deprived!  I know a lot of people won't do any form of CIO, but we did a modified version and just went in every 5 minutes.  It took 20 minutes, but he went to sleep on his own.  He woke up at 4am and cried only for 5 minutes.  The second night it took 15 minutes for him to fall asleep and he woke up again at 4am.  The third night was the charm.  He fell asleep within 7 minutes of laying down and slept the whole night.  He's slept the whole night through since then!!!  I swear it's amazing.  For what it's worth, I read Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems by Dr. Ferber and it really shed light on a lot of different things involving sleep.  Good luck!

OMG your kid is THREE MONTHS!  Let the kid go to sleep with it.

My SEVEN month old still goes to sleep with one.  Big deal!  Complain when you kid is over one.

  • She's 4 months. and the problem isn't her going to sleep with it, it's that she wakes continually for it. That is not healthy for her. Why don't you mind your own business?  If your 7 month old was severaly sleep deprived, you would have a problem with it too. DD has bags under her eyes constantly and a crabby disposition. I want to HELP her so she can be well-rested and realize that she doesn't NEED it to fall asleep.
