Cytotec (Misoprostol) Has anyone taken?

I was given this to miscarry yesterday. I have not had to use this with my last m/c's because it happened naturally.

I took it last night expecting it to be really bad.  I had some pretty bad cramping but not much bleeding.  Today nothing.  I am pretty sure it did not work.

I do not want to have a D&C (not like anyone does).  I took cytotec orally and am going to ask my RE tomorrow if I can take it again and will take vaginally.

Has anyone had this not work for them?  Anyone have to take it twice?  Did you end up having to have a D&C?

Thanks.

Re: Cytotec (Misoprostol) Has anyone taken?

  • Hi, I hope it is ok that I am replying to you.  I used to post on this board before I got pg with my DS.  With my 2nd loss after seeing a HB twice I m/c.  My OB gave me the option of the cytotec and I tried it because I wanted to avoid a D&C.  I tried it for 2 days (vaginally).  I had a ton of cramping and some large clots but an ultrasound showed that I had not passed everything so I had to have the D&C anyway.  I am so, so sorry for your losses.  Sending you lots of hugs.

  • I took it and it didn't really work how I thought it would, although I did not end up having a D&C.  I used it orally with my first loss and had some cramping but no big increase in bleeding like I expected. I just continued to bleed moderately for a few days before I went back to the ob.  I thought I was going to have a D&C that day and had been instucted by the nurse not to eat/drink anything after midnight the night before.  I was lucky though, my ob did an exam first and was actually able to pull some tissue out that was stuck. After that, my bleeding did increase, but it was still never super heavy. My betas went down pretty quickly at that point, but I probably bled for 2+ weeks.

Sorry you're dealing with this, and I hope you don't have to have a D&C.

  • I had an MC on December 1. I was about six weeks. I did pass the sac on my own. However there was residual tissue that I needed to take the Cytotec for. I took it vaginally two mornings in a row and had horrible cramping but never passed anything. I'm still having trouble with my hCG. A month and a half later it is still not at zero. Trying to be patient. Sorry you're dealing with this and I wish you luck.
