High-Risk Pregnancy

eating between gd diagnosis and appt time

I got the call yesterday that I failed the 3 hr gtt and the nurse told me she scheduled me to meet with the diabetic folks (I forgot the name of them here) on Friday afternoon.

I've started with writing down everything I eat for my meals and snacks since I don't want to rely on a prego brain when I meet with them.  I've already started to avoid the easily avoidable sugars (no candy, no oatmeal -- because I love brown sugar with it). Actually started the cut back when I failed the 1 hour.  While eating a huge spoonful of peanut butter last night it occurred to me that I will need to learn to measure serving sizes -- anyone know of a good instructional resource for this?

Is there anything else I should be doing in the next few days? Also, how do you satisfy the sweet tooth when sugar/corn syrup is out and so are artificial sweetners (I've never been able to tolerate them digestively/physically)

  • You got measuring cups? Then you're good to go. And you don't have to measure every single thing out. Once you've been doing it for a few weeks you get good at guesstimating sizes.

I personally also am lenient with myself. If I want a candy bar, I'll grab a snack size one or a bite of w/e it is my husband is eating in front of me. But that's just me. I know that if I continually deny myself over and over and over it will lead to a break down and a king-size candy bar lol. But my sweet tooth has been pretty easy to satisfy. I use a strawberry jelly that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup so it's carbs are about the same as the sugar free option without the nasty aftertaste. So, I make a PB&J for lunch almost every day, yum!

  • they should make it easy and give you a suggested meal plan with options for meals and snacks. the measuring isn;t too bad once you get used to it. with my last pregnancy i spent 2 weeks in the hospital for PTL and was shocked at how much food they gave me. it was probably double the amount i ate at home but i still got the same readings from my monitor. it will be a lot of trial and error in the beginning to see what your body will tolerate. • Yea, pretty much what everyone has said. I'll add, have you tried Stevia or Splenda? I fine these artificial sweeteners less offensive than the older ones. As for electrolytes, I've been drinking Smart Water or the generic brand, expensive but something my body needs.

  • Thanks for the ideas and btdt advice/experiences.

I have tried stevia a few years ago, but found it best for coffee so far just because the strong flavor of the coffee overpowered the flavor of the stevia (at least the brand I tried).

From reading some of the posts, I'm getting the sense that the hardest time to deal with the gd dietwise is the time between diagnosis and the appt where you learn all the diet info/instructions.....so in 48 hours I should be good to go.....I hope.
