Yet another solid question...

So, I've been trying this solid thing for a few weeks now (oatmeal) and dd won't open her mouth for the spoon. I've tried mixing it with fruit and still not opening.  I've tried offering after a bottle, before a bottle and in between bottles and she still won't open her mouth.  Any suggestions?

Re: Yet another solid question...

  • If she doesn't want it, she's not ready. Did her ped recommend you start due to weight gain? If not, just be patient. She will take it when she's ready.

  • Maybe she's not ready, but have you tried just putting it down on the tray in front of her, and seeing if she's interested in touching it/picking it up herself?  If she puts her hands in it, she'll likely put her hands in her mouth.  Maybe she'd get used to it better that way?

You're probably right. My niece was not into being spoon fed. She took the spoon, wiped her hands on it and licked her hands. It was gross but she ate. It could be a spoon issue.

The two or three times I've fed Howell, he pulls the spoon out of my hand and chews on the spoon himself. I also notice he licks my fingers if I've been eating something. I need to be careful I don't feed him peanuts or something!

  • She may not like the spoon. Or maybe not ready yet. Will she try to grab at the spoon or the food? Does she seem interested?

Yes, pedi recommended it at 4 month appt.  Weight gain and to help with sleep.  I am thinking she's just not ready.

Yes, I've tried putting it in front of her, she doesn't really stick her hands in it.

She'll grab the spoon and throw it on the ground, lol!  Maybe she's just not ready.  Hopefully she will be someday.  I'll just keep on trying every few days.

  • Half the time DS2 won't open his mouth for rice cereal so I thought maybe he wasn't ready.  But if I'm eating and I move my spoon infront of him, he'll open up.  Maybe rice cereal just really sucks lol.
