Craft to bring to Kindergarten birthday celebration?

My son's school does not allow parents to bring in cupcakes for birthday celebrations. I think it's silly, since they allow treats at all other kinds of celebrations and there are vending machines at the school filled with all sorts of junk.  Also, cupcakes and fun and delicious.  But whatever.  The teacher suggested we bring in a craft for the kids to do instead.  Any ideas?  It's for Kindergarteners.

Thanks!

  • They usually don't allow snacks due to allergies. I know my sons previous daycare, we could only bring in packaged goods because they could see the ingredients on the box. But in regards to the craft, you could always go on Pinterest and look up something for Valentines Day or just search for kids crafts. There is a ton of ideas on there.

  • Thanks, PhilaPahn!  I was hoping for specific suggestions. I have done the searches and was hoping someone would have suggestions for something they have tried.  I know some kids have allergies, but that's not the reason why cupcakes are banned at the public schools in our town.  It's b/c of the sugar.   There are tons of different treats at holiday parties, so it really doesn't make sense. The preschools usually have kids with allergies store a stash of cupcakes for birthday celebrations at school.

  • I'd suggest something simple that doesn't need a lot of instructions. These Valentine's day bugs are pretty easy.

  • Also, plastic cup crafts are good. The kids can glue precut shapes on the outside and the pieces fit inside for easy distribution. There are many different designs if you want to google, but here is an example.

For this one, I'd paint the wood ball for them and just use red plastic cups. They have tons of heart foam stickies at the craft store.

Also, it's good to include a little picture of the finished product just printed on plain printer paper.

That's definitely weird if they have vending machines full of junk. My sons daycare only did it to ensure what ingredients were in the cupcakes. His elementary school doesn't allow anything for birthdays, balloons, cupcakes, goodie bags, nothing at all.

I would really try to find a easy valentines day craft. There is a bunch using paint and making a heart with two hands for valentines day. Simple and quick.

  • Take a look here:

    https://www.orientaltrading.com/craft-and-hobby-supplies/crafts-for-kids-a1-388781-2-0.fltr

These are craft kits that come with detailed instructions that the teacher can guide as a whole class, one step at a time.   Each kit comes with materials for multiple projects of the same kind.

If the teachers are into a little more freedom and want to walk around and guide the kids, individually, Alex Toys have some really cute craft boxes that also have multiple, self explanatory crafts.

If you don't like either of these ideas, you can always go to Pinterest and find sweet crafts and just put a craft basket together with printed instructions for the teacher.   Klondike has covered this idea above....

  • Walmart usually has some Valentine's Day art project kits available that are appropriate for Kindergarteners...  Last year I saw some foam photo frames.  They also had the above type project kits...  JoAnn's is another possibility as they have a whole section dedicated to school type group crafts...

Otherwise, you could order kids bulk t-shirts online (some places have them for $2 each) and do tie dyed shirts...  Every kid likes a tie dyed shirt!

  • You could get masks that they could decorate with feathers or color for Mardi Gras.

It makes a lot of sense because there are two-three holiday celebrations per school year, and there could be as many as 25 birthdays in a classroom (kids with summer birthdays like to bring in treats too).
