April 2013 Moms

I'm a judgy B

There was a lady at the grocery store today with two girls (ages approx. 7-10 or 11) in full makeup: blue eyeshadow, blush lipstick etc.  I was internally rolling my eyes-- we were never allowed to leave the house in makeup at that age, and I never would have let the kids I nannied wear makeup out at that age.  I guess I am old-fashioned?

  • Eh, I probably wouldn't have thought too much about it. I wasn't allowed to wear makeup at that age, but I did take dance lessons and we would have to get made up like you described for things like recitals, performances, dress rehearsals, etc. I probably would have just assumed they were wearing it for something like that.

Now if I saw them going out of the house every day wearing makeup like that at their ages, that's another story...

  • They definitely weren't wearing dance makeup.  I danced, and so did the ids I nannied for, so I can tell when that is what's going on.  Also, their hair was down and messy, so I'm pretty sure it was just an everyday thing.

    Then yikes! Indifferent

  •  I was at the airport in May and there was a girl who was probably 8 and had a full face of perfect makeup on and I totally cringed.

  • 7, no. 10, I was allowed to wear eyeshadow, mascara and lipgloss out of the house and to school. Most of the 5th graders I would assist wore some kind of makeup and shaved their legs so I wouldn't have thought anything of the 10,11 year old.

  • I wasn't allowed to wear makeup either, but good point about the recitals, etc -- I was a figure skater and we were always done up like that for rehearsals and shows, but if it was just a normal day, no way!

GIrls have the rest of their lives to look like overly made up hoochies.  No need to start it so young.

  • Yeah my daughter won't be wearing makeup until she is a lot older than that. Maybe they were just playing dress up and had a special play makeup day and needed to go to the store in a hurry?

  • When I was growing up the rule was I had to be in high school before I wore make-up. I hated it then but I think my kids will have a similar rule. 10, 11, 12...that is WAY too young, IMO. What need would a 10 year old have for make-up?

  • I was not allowed to wear makeup and I think that it is improper for little girls to wear it before the age of 13. Even then it is questionable! Lip golss yes, but mascara, lipstick, foundation is a total no go!

I was allowed lip gloss and clear mascara at 12; light lipstick and mascara at 13... I can't imagine WHY a kid would need to wear makeup at 10.  I mean, FFS, they have the rest of their life for that.

But, I barely wear makeup NOW, so maybe I'm the weird one. ;-)

  • I'm judgy about stuff like that too. I figure there are plenty of people judging me at any given time on parenting, on my no effort ponytail and zero make up I wore mascara to a wedding in November and some powder and eye make up for family photos in October, otherwise I'm a moisturizer and go girl, on my weight everyone is judging something.

  • Ya, that's too young for obvious makeup. Well when they get to the pre-teen ages I see nothing wrong with teaching them how to do natural looking, simple makeup. But you should show them how or do it yourself. I didn't start wearing makeup until 14 but all of my friends were already, I just thought they looked silly.

  • There is no way I would let my DD out of the house with makeup on at that age.  To play? Okay.  But to go out? Nope.  I wasn't allowed to wear makeup until I was in high school and I plan to enforce that rule with DD.

  • Im still in my teens (19). I wasn't allowed out of the house in makeup, unless it was to a school function, until I was 15...mainly because I didn't know how to wear it hahaha ( for 4th of July I put blue and red eyeshadow on my eyes :p...not a pretty combo).  I wasn't allowed to shave my legs until then either :p that was because I was a total clutz and  she was afraid I'd really hurt myself...which I did lol mom's know best ladies...they know when to allow their children to do things and when not to. My mom knew me very well.
  • No, I would think the same! It's one thing to maybe get to put some on for something like drss up at home but I wouldn't be okay with my daughter wearing all of that especially outside of the house
