Eclampsia x2?

So ladies who already have one or more, here's a question. Did you have eclampsia with your first? If so, did you have it with your second?

I am scared to death. I had full blown eclampsia with dd. I had bp that sky rocketed to 250/200, passed out in a mass seizure, was put on Mag sulfate, and prepared for emergency c section (completely knocked out) @ 29 weeks. It was horrible. Dd came out a fighter -- born at 1lb 13oz and 13"long. Preemies are very hard work. I'm so scared it'll happen again. I have to say however, that I'm significantly thinner than I was then, I eat a whole lot less, drink a ton more water, and my bp is in normal ranges (@the doc it was 116/71). This new o.b.is awesome and I appreciate him monitoring me so closely. He made me do a 24 urine test and has done blood work to check my kidney function. I'm also seeing a perinatologist (first appt on thurs right before u/s). The only positive thing I can say about seeing a perinatologist is that I''ll get more ultrasounds lol.

Anyone been in or know anyone who has been in a similar situation? the o.b. didn't discuss the percentages or likelihood of it being a repeat occurrence, which I will definitely ask about on thurs. Any insight -- good or bad?

Re: Eclampsia x2?

  • My BP spiked and I was supposed to do my 24hr urine the day I was admitted for PTL, so I don't know if I would of ended up with Pre-E or not, but my understanding of it is having it once puts you at a higher risk of having it again.  That being said....I know several people on here and IRL that had it with their first and had no issues at all with the next one.

  • I also had a preemie the first time due to HELLP Syndrome. If you're not familiar with it, HELLP is considered to be a strand of Eclampsia, but not all doctors agree on that! Anyway, for this pregnancy I am considered very high risk as there is a pretty great chance that I will develop the syndrome again. Definitely talk to you doctor about it. Having it one time is not a guarantee that you will have it again, but there are definite signs that you, and your doctor, can be looking for, etc.

I have no experience with it and it sounds like that was a very difficult experience for you! My MW has had patients with previous pree who have avoided it by following the Brewer Diet for pregnancy. She recommended it to me last pregnancy. I'm just sharing if you're interested in looking into it. GL!

I'm checking out this Brewer diet. Never heard of it before! But if it can decrease my chances of getting it, it can't hurt. I'm sorry of limited on what I can and can't eat anyway because of my lap band. I can't eat pasta and bread cuz they'll come right back up. And beef is almost impossible for me to eat! It sucked at first, but now I don't crave those things at all.

Thank you, ladies! :) It's nice to know I'm not all by myself in the high risk category :)

Wow I googled the diet. I already eat a lot of stuff on the list, but to have to eat that much every day seems like a chore! Lol. I usually don't eat that much! I'll loosely follow it until I talk to the doc on Thursday! Can't hurt. Most everything on there is healthy and nutritious.

  • I'm sure they are going to watch you like a hawk and even if you start creeping up they will probably send you to the hospital for bloodwork and probably won't hesitate to put you on mag sulfate to prevent a seizure this time. Also the good thing is, they will better prepared to anticipate a preterm delivery this time and can prepare better such as giving betamethasone. Good luck hopefully none of that will be necessary, but its a pretty good chance.

  • I don't have experience with it but I would think the fact that you have lost weight and are living what sounds to be a healthier lifestyle should help decrease your chances, or at the very least the severity.

  • I've read that if you have the same baby father your risk is lower. I had pree with my son. I was on bedrest for 5 weeks before delivering him at 37 weeks. Started as pregnancy induced hypertension which then turned to pree the day i went in for observation which was the day he was born. My dr told me the chances of getting it again are lower. I also read the earlier you got pree the higher the chance of getting it again.

I havr heard thr same thing. I had it with my first son. It came on later and I was induced at 39 weeks because of pree.

My dr said as long as the babies have the same father, your chances are much lower of it happening again.
