High-Risk Pregnancy

Eclampsia x2?

With my dd I had full blown eclampsia. I had the ungodly high bp, the mass seizure, the emergency c-section, and a preemie that weighed in at 1 lb 13oz. So this pregnancy I'm seeing a different o.b. He's running all these kidney function tests, etc and I'm already seeing the perinatologist. I'm a 100% healthier than when I had dd--meaning I weigh significantly less, eat way healthier, and drink a ton more water. I'm scared to death I'll go eclamptic again.

Anyone here have eclampsia and go on to have a healthy second pregnancy? Or did you end up eclamptic a second time?

Re: Eclampsia x2?

  • I never progressed to eclampsia, but I've had preeclampsia with both of my pregnancies. Wishing you better luck the second time around!

  • Congrats on your pregnancy.  Prayers you don't have a similar experience as you did with your DD.  It sounds like you are off to a good start.
  • Have you looked up statistics on the rate of re-occurance? I would assume it's similar to severe pre-e, which is approximately 30%. That sounds scary, but in subsequent pregnancies it usually hits later and is less severe, plus a 30% chance of getting it again means there's a 70% chance you won't. I had severe pre-e/HELLP and so far everything looks good this time around. I wish you the best of luck!!

BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
    BFP2: 3/18/12, blighted ovum, natural m/c @ 7w4d
BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

  • Thanks, ladies! I have another appt on Thursday to further discuss this. I was just being a worry wart. Someone on my BMB suggested the Brewsters Diet for Pregnancy. Anyone familiar with this or have any experience with it? I was going to also ask about this at my appt.

  • I also had full blown eclampsia. Mine was do to my age, I was 15. I made it all the way to 40wks then was induced. I fortunately had a 8lb 13 oz baby. It was an awful experience. The seizure was so scary!

This time I'm much older, 31. I also see a perinatologist. She told me that I have a 15% chance of it reoccuring. They have me monitoring my BPs daily. I've had all the lab work done early on in this pregnancy. They monitor my urine at every appt and I had a growth scan every 4 weeks. Now I'm at the stage were I see my peri weekly for fetal monitoring and a quick u/s just to make sure things look ok. SO FAR SO GOOD!! My BPs have been normal and the baby is actually growing a little ahead of schedule. I have done nothing different. No special diets.

I know it's scary. I also have a uterine prolapse and thought that it was going to be a issue until my OB told me that the history of eclampsia was a HUGE concern. I was so young that I never even thought that it could be an issue. So this entire time I feel like I'm just waiting for my BPs to jump thru the roof or worse, another seizure. BUT then I just remind myself, your body is better prepared thid time around. AND, it sounds like you are as well.
