Ultrasound today! Is it ok to tell people now??

Hey ladies,

We had our first 'official' ultrasound today! I say official because I had one 2 weeks ago in the hospital when I had some bleeding..but this was always booked as our first one.

Little peanut is doing great! Heart beat is 167..growing well, and dating the same as it was 2 weeks. Due Aug.12! :)

The subchorionic hematoma is getting smaller too, she said its so small it will likely just absorb in no time, and as long as I keep following my doctors orders of taking it easy, it will likely be no issue.

So with all that being said... even though I'm not even quite 10 weeks yet.. is it ok to tell the world now?! I know most people wait until 3 months, but that's because most ultrasounds are at the 12 week point right, and that's when you really know you're good to go. But since we had it and we know things are good.. are we ok to let it out?

What do you girls think? My hubby wants to post the ultrasound on FB immediately, lol. All of our close friends and family already know, but I'm dying for it to just be public knowledge already!!

What are you gals doing?

Re: Ultrasound today! Is it ok to tell people now??

  • That is completely up to you. We told people after the ultrasound. It is a personal choice. If you want to share, go for it.

  • Honestly, nothing is ever for sure to go. You can tell whenever you feel ready to tell. A lot of people don't wait.
  • This is a highly personal decision there really is no right or wrong. The reason many choose to wait has nothings to do with ultrasounds but the fact that the risk of miscarriage drops significantly once you hit second trimester. Some families don't want to have to "untell" everyone. That being said we shared our news very early last time and I did have a miscarriage and I am still not sorry we told. I received much more support than I would if we hadn't told and I am happy to have our baby acknowledged even though we lost her early.

  • We went FB-official as soon as the stick dried. There's no 'rule' on when to tell people. If you feel ready, go for it!
    Due with #5 April 22, 2015. It's a girl!!!!!

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

    this!

  • Congrats on a great US.

No one here can tell you when to announce. Unfortunately, miscarriage can happen at any point.

It's completely up to you when you choose to announce.

  • That's a personal decision. If you have already told your friends and family, you may as well. It's not a secret people keep well anyhow.

My DH has ants in his pants now that I have had a good u/s, but I had a missed m/c in the past after seeing the HB on an u/s.  I will be waiting until 2nd tri to tell anyone- even family.

  • Congrats on the U/S! We are waiting until 12 weeks to be completely open about our little peanut although a lot of our friends know already. It's so hard! Three and a half weeks to go....

I am questioning this. I believe the OP is right, most ultrasounds take place around 12 weeks and therefore once the heartbeat is seen, the risk drops, therefore it is common belief that risk drops in the second trimester.

I say this because I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and my doc told me my m/c rate dropped to between 5 and 10% (can't remember exactly)since we had seen a HB. I think that is the same that it drops to in 2nd tri so I believe that is why.

FWIW, I had an appt today and heard the HB on the doppler and they told me, feel free to announce if you want, this pregnancy is progressing great and it is good news that we heard it so early on the doppler.

She did say though some prefer to wait until after their NT scan so if that is a factor, that is something to think of.

    Sorry that was long:)

  • thanks for all the replies ladies.. I'm very aware its a personal decision and I am not looking for anyone to say "yes, go post on facebook" lol.. was just curious what others have done.

and to the last poster, sorry forgot your name, that's what my doc said after the first ultrasound in the hospital, "oh we've heard the heartbeat so your risk of miscarriage drops to nearly no risk" ... I think often when it happens there just wasn't a strong enough heart beat from the beginning..

anyway, I appreciate the input, we are really leaning towards just telling everyone! :)

You could be right about the fact that many don't have their ultrasound until 12 weeks, but there are also just as many that wait because of the significant drop in the chance of miscarriage in 2nd trimester. Yes once you see a heartbeat the rate drops, but not as significantly as hitting the 2nd trimester mark. I saw a strong heartbeat last pregnancy and it meant squat I still miscarried (as is the same for many women on this board.)

  • We just had our 2nd U/S at 9w3d (also had an earlier one due to bleeding) and since we have had 2 positive U/Ss with strong heartbeats and baby right on track we decided to tell our families last night. We have also told some friends. Still waiting for 2nd tri though to tell the FB crowd.

  • My first pg we started telling everyone after we saw a heartbeat at 9weeks. At the NTsan we found out we lost the baby at 12w1d... I never have regretted telling people at 9weeks. It was such a joyous time, and in exchange the amount of support we got back when we lost the baby was incredible.

Just my my two cents: My RE told me after a healthy heartbeat is heard in the 6th week then the risk falls to less than 10% and after it's heard in the 8th week it falls to 3%. Once you reach the second tri the chance of losing the baby is about 1-2% where it remains through your pregnancy. I've been the 10% and the 3% and even the 2% with an ectopic. Just hoping this time I'm on the right side of the statistics!
