GTKY - Favorite splurge

I know we're mostly frugal mamas on here, but everyone has something that they splurge on.  What's your favorite splurge? And don't say diapers, because we all know you like to splurge on diapers, lol.

Re: GTKY - Favorite splurge

  • Mine is anything food related.  I love to cook, so I love to splurge on special ingredients.  I haven't ever purchased truffles, though, because I'm too cheap, lol.  I also love going out to eat and trying specialty beers.
  • Travel... but we haven't been able to afford that for a couple of years now...

  • Oh...and trash bags, lol.  It's not necessarily my favorite splurge, but I always buy the expensive ones.  Every once in awhile I try to save money and buy the cheap ones and I always regret it!
  • Cleaning products. Buddy is super OCD about the house being clean and he "helps" me a lot so I only buy natural/organic cleaners because he's always in the cleaning cabinet and tackling some house mess. I like knowing its made of non toxic stuff.

  • Theatre tickets.  When I was young and kidless I got to go more often so I was more frugal with ticket prices.  Now that it's more of a luxury time wise, I splurge on great seats.

That said, I just realized that I'll have seen Wicked, Dream Girls, and Rock of Ages in the span of 4mo. Wicked was a BFF splurge as we've had 7 kids in 6yrs combined and we NEEDED girl time.  Dream Girls was a Christmas present to my mom.  DH got Rock of Ages tix for my b-day.

  • A date out with DH (even if it's just to the Pizza Hut buffet cause he's obsessed with pizza). It's been a little while since we've done it, but it's still my favorite.

  • Hair products. I don't make a big fuss over my hair timewise, but I find a quality cut with certain shampoo/conditioner /product combo makes a big difference. Sometimes I feel guilty buying them, but I'd secretly panic if I had to cut corners there!

  • Haircuts. I spent too many years rolling the dice every time I went to Great Clips and had smebody different cutting it all the time. Now I go to a nice salon and love my stylist.

  • Yarn and knitting accessories. I am a yarnaholic.

Also love to splurge on Korean grocery items at the Asian import grocery store...DH and I met in Korea, and I can cook a few things that remind us of our time there.

  • Travel and eating out. We try for at least one big international trip a year and like to take advantage of the amazing food scene here in San Francisco when we can.

OMG THIS!!! DH and I didn't meet in Korea, but I've shown him the light since we've met.  the nearest korean restaurant is 10 hours away from us, so we only get there on vacation once a year...but we make up for it everytime we go!

  • I splurge on fabric. I buy so much that it's more than I can even go through, so my stash just keeps multiplying!

Plus, we splurge on eating out pretty frequently.

  • Aveda hair products. I have tried to go cheaper but I always go back.
  • Family vacations.  When D turned 4 we drove from Nebraska to Seattle, stopping for 4 days in Jackson Hole WY.  It was awesome.  When G gets a few years older and D has had American history we plan to take a trip through the DC area.  Maybe spend a few weeks.

Also organic fruits and veggies.  Everytime I decide they are too expensive and buy the plasticy stuff from the normal grocery store I end up throwing most of it away because I sit and wonder what pesticide I'm eating the whole time I'm eating it.

  • A cleaning lady. I am a bit OCD about cleanliness, but husband is not. It's expensive, but she has saved our marriage!
  • Two things:

    1. Facials. I have very small pores that get so congested and make my skin look gross unless I get extractions every 5 weeks or so. It sounds prissy and if you ever met me IRL you'd never think I was the type. But I swear it's helped keep my skin looking about 10 years younger than it actually is (yeah, I'm old).

    2. Shoes. I don't own a car so I walk pretty much everywhere. Often while babywearing. So comfort and durability are more important than price (which isn't to say I'm not a sale-stalker). I figure I'm not spending money on gas or maintenance so it's important to have good shoes to keep my feet happy.

Ugh, believe it or not this makes me so jealous. I used to walk a lot, and since getting pregnant and dealing with my extreme morning sickness, I got out of the habit. I wish I walked everywhere. I bet I'd lose this last 15 pounds that I'm still hanging on to.

Oh my goodness, me too! I feel a little lame saying my "splurge" is groceries, but it totally is. I think it's the only thing I have a really hard time sticking to a budget on.

  • For DH and I both food (both in restaurant and groceries) is definitely something we splurge on.  Also concerts (although the frequency of those has gone down quite a bit).  When we travel we try to stay in nice hotels.

Yoga is another splurge of mine.  The classes aren't that expensive but since it's something I do just for myself it feels like a splurge!

We have a place we go to every year when we make our pilgrimage to  Destin, FL. They have great bibimbap. I am actually going to start making kimchi at home, since we go through about a jar a week.

I guess you could add that travel is something else we splurge on...we'll stay in and do nothing weeks on end, but then take off for a 4 day break in New Orleans, or take off for Florida for a bit.
