Anything to be done for pregnancy congestion?

I'm so frustrated with this constant congestion!!! I know im not sick because ive had the congestion since 2nd trimester and ive never had any other cold symptoms. Please tell me there is something i can do to get thru the day and be able to finally breath thru my nose again. I get anxious and feel claustraphobic and like I cant breath when i have to breath out of my mouth.

Any ideas would be nice!

  • Have you tried a neti pot squeeze bottle version works best or nasal spray? I know there are a few nasal sprays on my okay list...

  • Ditto to neti pot/squeeze bottle or saline spray.  I prefer the neti pot, but my husband uses a squeeze bottle version called NeilMed.  We bought it at a CVS drugstore.  I just use warmed (body temp) bottled water and a little bit of table salt (less than 1/2 teaspoon), but if you're really particular you can buy the packets of saline mix at a drugstore.  I find that doing it in the shower is best, a few minutes after getting in - let the steam begin to help soften/break up congestion, then use the neti pot or NeilMed to clear out the sinuses.  Works like a charm.

  • Ugh.  My right ear clogged last week and hasn't unclogged.  Doc told me to try Afrin, or the neti pot, but mostly I will just have to wait until after baby is born.  Good times.

  • You are going to laugh, but you know those things they use to suck out baby's nose at the hospital? I've been using one for 2 weeks now and I feel SO much better. I caught a nasty cold in L&D 2 weeks ago and this has helped a lot!

I also 2nd the neti pot/squeeze bottle. They are amazing.

  • I felt the exact same way a few months ago.  I went to my family doctor and she prescribed Rhinocort nasal spray (category B) and told me to take over the counter Zyrtec or Claritin.  Between the Zyrtec and the Rhincort I haven't had any problems in months.  Highly recommend it!

  • Loratadine. safest allergy medicine out there.Certain times of the year and some pet dander gives me really bad allergy attacks, its not the most potent allergy medicine out there but it helps alot.I took it here and there throughout my pregnancy and my sister in law who is an RN took it her entire pregnancy and had no affect on my beautiful nephew :)

  • It'll clear up once you have the baby, but in the meantime you can take something just ask your doctor.  My doc said I could take Sudafed, Benadryl, or Claritin (I think those were the ones).  I've had congested with both of my pregnancies, but for those most part just lived with it, but it sounds like your's is much worse.  I just developed a cold so have been taking Claritin and it seems to work pretty well.

  • A humidifier! I was dying and couldn't sleep at all, then I got one and run it almost 24/7, makes such a difference!
