Building stash - is this enough?

I'm not due until May, so I've got plenty of time to get everything in order.  After all of the reading I've done and some advice from a CD'ing friend, this is what I've bought:

24 prefolds, newborn to 15 lbs

12 covers, newborn and small, various brands

4 AIO's, newborn and small

2 packages of snappis

I've been confused about how long things will last, size-wise.  Obviously that will depend on how big the baby is when she gets here, but most of the covers say they are for 6 lbs - 18lbs, as well as the AIO's.

Is this sufficient, or am I missing anything big?   I think I'm going to wait on pockets until she grows out of these.  I'd also like some of the GMD fitteds, once she's out of the newborn size.

  • I didn't get to CD my NB, but it sounds like you've got a good stash. Do you have wet bags, CD safe diaper cream, and detergent?

Also, if you currently use softener or dryer sheets, now would be a good time to stop so that you're out of the habit by the time you're doing CD laundry.

  • We averaged 15 diapers per day the first month with DD, so for us that would not have been enough to wash every other day. Some people do fine with 12 per day, though. Just know you may end up having to wash every day and a half at first. Or order 1/2 dozen of the GMD newborn fitteds now. People really love them and I wish I would have had them with DD.

As far as how long they last, it really depends on your baby. Our newborn AIOs lasted 3 weeks. Not because DD outgrew the fit, but because she outgrew the absorbency. Infant sized prefolds will actually last for a very long time. DD got too chubby to snappi hers around 2.5-3 months old (~13 lbs I think), but based on what I've read here that might be unusually early. I ended up selling mine because I had the next size on hand, but had I wanted to I could have just tri-folded them in a cover and could still do so.

You have plenty of covers and snappis.

As PP asked, do you have any wetbags and/or pail liners? I use hanging wetbags instead of a pail, but regardless of the solution you choose, get 2 so you have one while the other is being washed.

  • My newborn stash was almost identical. I had 24 GMD prefolds and I think 8 (XS, S and thirsties duo size 1 covers), but I also had 10 GMD workhorse fitteds which I loved. They contain the poop much better than prefolds. Also, I was able to wash every other day. With only 24 diapers that would not have necessarily been able to do that.

As a side note. I had a 6lb DD in May 2012...She has stayed a peanut, so I got about 4.5-5 months out of my NB diapers. I am very happy that I had 3 XS/NB (4-9lbs)covers because even the thirsties duo 1 size (6-18lbs) were too big in the beginning.

  • Thanks, ladies!   I figured I would be good on covers for awhile.  I'll pick up a few more prefolds, or maybe go ahead and spring for the fitteds. I would prefer to wash every other day.

And thank you for the advice on having two wet bags. I didnt even think about having a spare while one is in the wash.
