High-Risk Pregnancy

High Risk Protocol

My twice weekly NSTs and once weekly BPP start today. Today I am having only an NST. Do I bring my hospital bag just in case? I don't think anything is wrong but it just crossed my mind that maybe I should be bringing it with me to these appts. What do you do?

Re: High Risk Protocol

  • If you already have a bag packed (or could get one together relatively quickly), I would bring it.  The point of NSTs is to determine if something is wrong, and if something is wrong, they will likely send you to the hospital.  In the unlikely event that happens, it will be easier for everyone if you already have your bag with you.

  • I did to my first NST b/c I was told initially it was due to the borderline low fluid found at my previous u/s. After that u/s and NST showed absolutely nothing wrong I stopped bringing my bag. I'm far enough along now that I figure if they admit me they'll probably be inducing me so I don't really need anything immediately and hubby can just stop at home on his way to the hospital.

  • I bring mine to every appt just in case. With DS1, I didn't have it with me and had to send DH home from triage to pack it and bring it. I don't want that to happen again!

  • I also do NSTs and BPPs each week. I haven't been bringing my bags with me, but they are definitely at home ready to go, but my in-laws have to drive by our house in order to get to the hospital so it will be an easy grab for them!

  • I never brought one.  I had one packed already though.  We live really close to the hospital so I figured in the unlikely event that I was told to go immediately and not even stop by the house someone else could grab it for me.  I was pretty sure that I could entertain myself for a little bit in the case of inducement (ok, really that means too worried out of my mind to need entertainment).  And a lot of the things in the bag were for after the birth, so obviously you have a bit of time to bring that.

  • Thanks! I'm only 15 mins from the hospital but at this early I think they'd send me to the other hospital with the better NICU, but that's still only about 30 mins from my house. I don't have a bag packed yet, I need to get on that! My NST will be 45 minutes, I have no idea what to do during it!

  • With DS it never occured to me to bring my bag to my appts.  But I was doing NSTs and BPPs for GD.  I actually hadn't even packed my bag by 37 weeks and I had to hurry and pack one when they called and told me I was being induced that day for pre-e. I will definitely be more prepared this time. Maybe keep a bag in your car and any other things that you might need your DH can bring them later.

I'm hoping I get a comfy bed because I can fall asleep any time of day lol. I'm in the waiting room now.

  • You could always leave the bag in your car?  I'm going to have a bag with essentials that I leave in the car and then a bag that someone can bring to me if I end up in the hospital.

That is a good idea because if I had my husband try to grab what I needed at our house I would end up with 1/8 of what I needed.  I'm going to make a list of all the things I need also...because I don't have extra of a lot of stuff (like makeup or clothes I will want to wear while in the hospital).

  • I nothing packed with my ds1 and went in with nothing.  With my 2nd starting at 32 weeks I always had my bag packed.  I brought my bag to every appt. - left it in the car just in case.
