Online Birthing Classes?

Alright, so DH and I signed up for an 8 week series for birthing classes, but they are an hour away and are from 7-9 on Monday nights.  I am usually asleep by 8:30, and we don't really want to be travelling in the snow, that late at night, for that many weeks.  His schedule is also not cooperating because he will be out of town right in the middle of the session.  There are a few other options, but I would have to take two days off from work for them, and my manager didn't think it was going to be possible.

My question is- has anyone done online birthing classes?  Are they helpful?  Should I consider that as an option?

I was so on top of things until our schedules decided to not cooperate!

Re: Online Birthing Classes?

  • I was wondering this, too!  I wasn't even sure they existed... Our hospital does offer birthing classes but I'm interested in taking something more natural birth oriented.  I'm interested to see the posts here...

  • My DH is training for a new job out of town so we can't commit to a 6-8 week course. We signed up for all the one day classes at the hospital: the tour, breastfeeding class, infant care, infant CPR and an infant massage course I thought sounded fun. For birthing info my midwives gave me a reading list to pick and choose from and I ordered a dvd from Amazon that had good reviews. Its a 2 disc, 6 session childbirth class called Laugh and Learn About Childbirth.

  • I used the Laugh and Learn DVD's for my twins! I am sure I still have them somewhere...time to dust 'em off I guess! They also make a Laugh and Learn for breastfeeding and infant care, in case you're interested.

Those are actually nice because it feels like you are sitting in a classroom as there are other couples "around you" on the video, so it is kind of like you are virtually there.

I wonder if they've updated those in the past seven years? Going to Amazon to check...;)

  • I actually watched about 2/3 of Laugh and Learn About Childbirth on YouTube until the copyright holders got wise to it and had the video pulled. My DH and I did enjoy the parts we saw.

  • They do exist. My mom is a lactation consultant and childbirth educator and she offers online classes through her business. It's awesome because they're usually cheaper and you go at your own rate, and I know for hers you can get one on one help via email, text or phone. I don't wanna shamelessly plug her on TB but if you would like info I would be happy to PM info or answer questions.

  • The Laugh and Learn About Childbirth DVDs are available on Netflix. We're giving it a try next week. I watched a 25-minute segment online and it seems helpful.
