Silly Question: Opening a Bank Acct?

what do I need to open an acct? and what bank would you go with? Wells Fargo is right down the street from my house but is ALWAYS super busy and you need to have a $1000 balance or Direct Deposit for it to be Free Checking.

Re: Silly Question: Opening a Bank Acct?

  • We have Wells.  Is it going to be a joint account?  You can set up J's paycheck to have a partial dollar amount go into a separate account.

  • We bank with Credit Unions.  Redwood CU for DH, DC and our Joint Accts.  And Travis CU for my personal.  With both places, if you already have an existing account you can open a separate one pretty easily, I think the min's are about 500, with 0 min balance for checking and 5-25 min balance for savings.

I would start with who you bank with currently & work outward from there.

Most CU's have Co-op ATM's where you can make deposits, withdrawls & transferrs pretty easily with no fees from the ATM or your bank.  And a lot of functionallity is available online.  Definately a lifesaver for me with my personal account as there aren't any branches near my home, but I've been with them so long, I hesitiate to leave.

  • Also, CU's are very friendly to small businesses & may have a more reasonable opening balance than a traditional bank.  Check out their web addy's, most, if not all info is available to non-members.
  • I believe that you need a social security number and ID. ?If you are opening it for Faith then you or DH need to be on the account with her.?

  • We bank with a Credit Union too. I just don't want to have to go to Martinez to open it.

Amanda: The whole point is the money in it would be for business ONLY things...no outside money. So I don't want to link it to Jason's paycheck.

It's not for Faith. It's for my business. :)

  • We have Wells, I just was added to DH's account after we were married. I have direct deposit so it is no problem for us.

I have had no problems with Wells since joining them 2 years ago. I also have a BoA account and not happy with them normally. I use it mainly to handle the condo expenses. BoA has separate systems for each state so they are difficult to do deposits in CA when the account was set up in GA.

  • I bank with a credit union by your place I believe it's western health credit union in concord,ca... I've had no problems with it... I think you just have to donate to something if you want to be a member.
  • Are you just opening a personal account but using it for business banking? or are you opening a business account. To open a business account you need to register your business then apply for a EIN.

WAMU has free business checking (though with their recent troubles don't know if you want to go with them)
