Parenting after a Loss

S/O baby wearing Moby or K'tan?

DD likes to be held all the time. My wrists are suffering and the carpal tunnel I developed in 3rd tri is getting worse. I am ready to go out to get a wrap. We never got a wrap or carrier with our first born. Would like to know opinions on the Moby vs K'tan. I have lower back issues so I need something that is strong and supportive. I would wear it around the house to free up my hands as well as taking her out for walks.

  • We used a moby. I really liked it. I would also look into a ring sling

  • My moby skills are lacking. I loved it when she was in the newborn hold, but now I don't feel like I can ever get it secure enough. I really wish I had an ergo!

  • I LOVE my moby! DS is already 18lbs and I can still wear him just fine with no back pain.

  • We have a Moby and I like it. There is a slight learning curve getting used to it but once you do it's great. Never tried the K'tan so I can't speak for that.

The only thing I will say is that probably any carrier you use will cause some lower back strain, but no more than holding the baby all the time does!

  • I have a k'tan and it is great for my little guy. When he gets heavier and definitely for my toddler now, my Ergo is easier on my back because it puts most of the weight on my hips. The k'tan distributes it well between my back and shoulders, but still isn't as good for heavier loads. I love it for easy in/out and easier to sit down though. I've never tried a Moby to compare.

  • I am spatially challenged (read: not so smart), and couldn't get the hang of the Moby. But I love my K'tan.

  • I tried several carriers with DS.  I had a bjorn which worked well when he was a newborn, but started to kill my back soon.  I tried the Moby but it was just too much and I couldn't get the hang of it.  I love my Ergo sport though! He is 27 lbs now and can still carry him comfortably without hurting my shoulders or back.

  • I (and B) adored the K'tan. I used it until she was about 6 months, then I switched to the Gemini, which I also really liked. I was still able to comfortably carry her in it about a month ago.

  • Thanks ladies! I think I will start with a Moby as DH can use it also then as DAd gets bigger try one of the other carriers mentioned like the Ergo.

I also pulled out a sling wrap from the Goodwill bag and tried it with DD. Someone gave it to me 3 years ago and I could never figure it out but I think I finally did today. It was OK. I still had to keep the baby off to one side and keep her head supported.

  • Melly! Congrats to you!

I highly recommend looking into the Mei Tai carrier.. you can wear DD in it when she is a peanut all the way through toddlerhood. My husband can wear it too...

If it is a pouch sling, be VERY CAREFUL....those carriers have mostly been recalled because they are not safe due to baby's positioning not being ideal.  For any babywearing (except back carries with a woven wrap or an SSC like an Ergo - never do a back carry with a stretchy wrap like a moby) - baby should be visible and kissable - so close enough that you can kiss their forehead, not lower, unless actively nursing.

Thanks...I think it's a pouch type so I will just go out and try the Moby first.

Jules, hi!!! Thanks for recommending the MeiTai. It looks awesome but a little over my budget right now. If I have success with the Moby then I will get something stronger later when the kid is heavier.
