DS won't drink anything but milk

I promise this isn't the same as the question below (while we are still on bottles for milk). DS won't drink enough water or juice from his sippy. I give it during meals, during play, and he'll take some sips, but then he plays the throwing game with it. He knows how to use the sippy, but just doesn't want to?  Should I try it in a bottle? Help me.

Re: DS won't drink anything but milk

  • Why are you worried? Is he dehydrated? My DS loves his water in a sippy but in a day he probably only drinks 2 or 3 oz of water. He only sips his water too. Unless I am dehydrated I only sip my water too. If you are really concerned about the amount he drinks I wouldn't give him juice as that can be filling and the added sugar just increases the need for more water. You may want to change to sippy for milk too. That may help him realize that sippys are for drinking not playing but I think your DS sounds normal and healthy.

  • Our Ped Office actually doesn't recommend juice at all since there are no real health "benefits" and encourages milk and then water. So at the start of each day, we give our LO a sippy of milk and then refill it once (Based on the AAP recommendation for milk intake). If he ends up drinking both cups of milk we will give him a sippy of water. We don't always get to the water but our LO doesn't mind nor does the Ped since he isn't dehydrated and gets "water" from food.

So I would try not to worry too much about him not taking to juice and just ask your Ped next time to see what their stance is. As PP said, you're LO is probably okay! :o)
