Paging Dr. Bump

On Monday I noticed a rash on my foot/leg.  Clusters of very small red dots - they aren't raised, they don't itch.  Looks a little bit like a heat rash.

This morning I woke up with what felt like a blister on my inner cheek.  I looked in the mirror and I have one large red sore spot on my inner cheek, and a handful of small red dots similar to the one on my foot/leg.  The large spot is somewhat sensitive/sore, but not painful.

No fever, no cough/runny nose/sore throat, no stomach ache/diarrhea/vomiting.  I'm feeling perfectly fine.

I've been googling rashes all morning (don't recommend it) and I'm completely stumped.  So I thought I'd consult our team of amateur diagnosticians.  Does anyone know what this might be?  Should I go to the doctor or just monitor it?

  • Hand foot and mouth?

That's what I thought, but the HFM rash is sort of blistery and on the bottom of feet, right?  Because my dots are completely flat, solid red, and on the top of my foot/ankle.

DS had a blend of blisters and flat red. Many flat red turned into blisters. His was really bad and all over his body.

I second hilarity's suggestions. Have you eaten anything different or used different soaps? Perhaps a canker sore and mild rash from an allergic reaction?

  • Sorry, by inner cheek I meant inside my mouth.  Canker sores are white though and my sore is deep red.  In fact, every single mouth condition I found looks whitish.  I think that's what made me so confused, even when I search red mouth sore I get images with inner white rings.  (Seriously, don't search it).

I do get eczema pretty frequently, so maybe that's what the leg rash is?  It just looks so, so, so different from usual.

Ooooh, so there's still time for them to raise, good point.

I went on a mini-vacation Friday-Sunday - stayed in a hotel, ate different foods, went to different places.

  • Probably not since they don't itch but if you stayed in a hotel the leg bumps could be bed bugs.  But my first thought was hand foot and mouth as well.  Hope you're feeling better soon.

That's the thing, because of the hotel stay my mind is racing to all of these terrible things.  I feel really creepy crawly just talking about it.

For your sake, I really hope it's a canker sore or immune reaction, but I'm thinking HFM. Then again, DS has had it bad twice so I tend to freak over mouth rashes or sores.

The bed bugs is a good heads up. Did you inspect the room?

Could you have two things going on? Is the leg/foot rash on one side of your body? Could you have shingles?

I don't know if it's related or not.  A 4 day spread is pretty wide.

The leg/foot rash is on both feet/legs - but about twice as bad on the left one.

    I don't think it's shingles because there's nothing on my side/back.  Don't google shingles.

  • I have no experience personally with HFM. I think it can start out as red dots that turn into fluid filled blisters and it can spread to the mouth. Have you checked your temp for a slight fever?

I thought of that too when CB said she stayed in a hotel.

CB, it almost does sound like HFM.  Can you go to UC or your primary and get it checked so you know what it is?

Yeah, I was sort of debating whether or not I should make an appointment.  I'll give them a call and see if they can fit me in.

I was thinking this too, though I have never had experience with it.
