teething or something else?

subject: teething or something else?

dd has not been herself the last three days.
she is usually a very happy little girl, but starting out of the blue on Monday she's been REALLY fussy. crying a ton. I've noticed she's also been chewing on everything in sight, batting at her face and ears, holding her gums and drooling....a lot of these, though, are just normal baby behaviors.
there isn't anything noticeably showing through her gums.

her temp is fine and when she is calm and i mess with her ears, there is no reaction...so, it's led me to believe it's not an ear infection.

any ideas? these have been her three fussiest days ever. the only thing that seems to console her is to be held.

she did get vaccinated last Thursday. she was completely fine Friday through Sunday. this all started suddenly on Monday. could the vaccination crankiness be that delayed ?

thanks for any ideas.

Re: teething or something else?

  • I think this some kind of wonder week. I heard week 19 is rough from 16 to 20 weeks. Ds's appetite has been all over the place, in addition to being clingy and fussy. One day he would go 3.5 hours without eating, then the next he couldn't even make it 2.

    It could be the week 19 wonder week. It coincides with the 4 month wakeful crap too. Yay!

    Here's what my reminder email said:

    The perceptual world your baby enters after the next leap is the world of 'events.' Until your baby has gone through this leap, he can only perceive smooth transitions. After he has gone through this leap, he is able to perceive a short, familiar series of 'smooth transitions' with all his senses ? seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, and tasting ? and also when it comes to interactions with those around him. Examples include the perception of a bouncing ball, or grasping something with a hand. Your baby will enjoy the classic nursery rhymes with gestures, such as "Itsy Bitsy Spider..."

    Tip: If your baby is 'fussy,' be sure to observe if he is mastering new skills already, or attempting to do so.

    After this leap, your baby's skills will have expanded and you may notice he:

    • Is suddenly very active: one moment he is taking a rest, the next moment suddenly everything about him moves;
    • Hardly misses when he grasps something;
    • Puts mother's hand in his mouth;
    • Pulls a cloth away from his own face (first still slow);
    • 'Hits' the table with a toy;
    • Is busy with an "activity center";
    • Searches to see where mom or dad are;
    • Reacts to his mirror image;
    • Responds to his name;
    • Uses consonants;
    • Pushes the breast away when he has enough;
    • Grumbles when he is impatient.

  • My baby has been the same and I'm pretty sure its teething.  Even though you can feel the tooth, it itches them.  He wants nothing to do with teething toys though.  Its all about our fingers and his.  Try giving some Tylenol and if she calms down, then its probably teething.

  • DD has been fussier too, and I think it's a combo of pre-teething, wonder week 19, and also being out of her normal daycare routine.  We realized that we weren't being as good as our daycare provider about making sure she gets long naps, and then she was a terror by evenings.

    our pediatrician said that 'pre-teething' behavior can last up to 2 months.

    BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks) BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy) BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy) BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12) BFP #5 5/2013 (Griffin born 1/23/14 with heart defects, now repaired!)

  • S is the same way, teething. His pediatrician gave us the go ahead for Motrin because of his weight and that ish is 8,000 times better than Tylenol; doesn't make him drowsy, works much faster, lasts longer. But S is a lot bigger than Koa, so I would check with her pediatrician if you want to opt for the Motrin.

    I feel like we're in a revolving door of wonder weeks.
