When would you seek help?

Hi ladies,

I've looked around without finding a straight answer.  I know most ppl say to wait a year before getting tested for infertility.  I have had a miscarriage, and don't know how that effects the wait.   When should I talk to a Dr about further testing? 

~12 cycles 

~12 months without any birth control

~12 months of well timed intercourse

~12 months since the end of the miscarriage

 FYI~ I'm 29, have had 1 tube/ovary removed, am treating my LPD with B6 (9 days without B6, 11-12 with), and had 1 miscarriage.

What does your OB say? 

Seeing your history I would do it now.

I knew in my gut something wasn't right after 3 months of trying (1yr off of BC) and sure enough if we had waited a yr we would have still not been pregnant and would have had even more Obstacles then we already had to overcome. 

The reality is no fertility doctor is going to turn you away if you have the money.  Also it allows you to take it slower and not jump in all the way. Adding one piece at a time and not being rushed. 

 Good luck and listen to your gut not the Doctors a pinion

Depends how in a hurry you are. If you are fine with trying, then keep at it. I think you certainly could go to a RE at anytime if you and DH want a child now. I know I waited too long before I went and I could kick myself for that!

I would go now because it can't hurt to go early and have them tell you to try naturallyfor a while.

I have deep regrets about waiting. It won't hurt to have a consult. Sorry about your m/c and best of luck to you!

If you are ready for a baby Id go now given your background, sometimes I think I waited too long as well the older you get the harder it is it feels like. If you don't feel comfortable with the REI look for one that wants to work with you as I had some trial and error doctors.

I waited a year only to find out that I have PCOS. I really wish that I went to my doctor before and that i started my treatment sooner.

(hope I'm not out of place posting here, but I used to post on here so I thought I would give my experience/advice)

The general wisdom I have heard is a year of not preventing.  My OB tells people to get testing done/help after 6 cycles of actively trying.  She never told me the reasoning, but here is what I think it is - 80% of couples will have conceived within 6 cycles.  Of the remaining 20%, half of them will concieve in the next 6 months.  The other half has infertility issues.  Therefore, if you have not conceived in 6 months, there is a 50/50 chance you probably have an IF issue. In my opinion, better safe than sorry.

I did not wait a year to see an RE...and I'm glad I didn't.  I could tell something wasn't right within a few months off the pill (wonky cycles, hot flashes, short periods, short luteal phase, etc.) and turns out I was right.  I had DOR (dimminished ovarian reserve) due to being a fragile X premutation carrier.  I am glad I did not wait because my condition (like some others) only gets worse the longer you go and it could have prevented me from conceiving at all.
