Harmony & MaterniT21 Test

I am going to be asking my doctor for the Harmony and MaterniT21 testing my DH family has Down's and Autism that run in the family and we all feel it is very genetic. It does not run in my family, but I do not want to take any chances his one brother and a sister have already terminated Down's babies ( this was a personal choice please do not say anything hateful or mean) DH does have another sister that has both Down's and classic autistic children. Does anyone know if these test are covered by most insurance?

Re: Harmony & MaterniT21 Test

  • You would have to call your insurance to see. That would be the wisest course of action. Go to the source.

As to termination of a DS baby. I personally would not terminate for downs, but that is my personal feelings. It's not polite to tell people how they are allowed to respond to your post's contents.

Some people feel very strongly about abortion. They are allowed their opinions.

She didn't say not to voice our opinions, she said please don't say anything hateful or mean.

The main point I was trying to make is that you can't tell people on a public forum how they can respond to your posts. Period.

I don't think she was telling, I think she was politely requesting.

I think it will depend on your individual insurance. I think the best thing to do is just call your insurance and ask.

    FX for you!

I think she knows that by stating what she did. She didn't want slack cause it wasn't her who terminated. She was giving some history that I personally feel she was better off leaving out to avoid any drama.

Agreed. It didn't seem terribly necessary.

  • I don't know your specific insurance plan, but I'm fairly sure (not 100%) that Autism cannot be picked up through any sort of scan, even after birth, even into adulthood. It is diagnosed through behavioral criteria. As far as DS, I think given your genetic predisposition, you have a good case to make with your insurance company. Good luck!

  • I am 100% sure that they can not determine autism from genetic testing.  Researchers have no idea what the cause is, there may be a genetic predisposition, but if there is they have no idea what chromosome it lies in.  Obviously, as Down's Syndrome's scientific name is Trisomy 21, it's due to a genetic mutation that can be found before birth.  Honestly, if you wouldn't consider terminating the pregnancy if it's positive, there's really no point in getting the testing.  Even if you know the outcome, you can't change it or do anything about it.  Enjoy your pregnancy without that "hanging over your head" if you will.

  • I had the harmony test done. It won't change the outcome for me either but I would like to be prepared if my baby has health issues. It was covered with a deductible for me because I am over 35 but if you have a family history of issues it should also be covered.
