Special Ed/Behavioral Issues related

I have two younger sisters and three nephews, all about 900 miles away. My youngest sister called this morning and we discussed my nephew (spurned by yesterday). I'm looking on your opinions if you have experience in this area.

Here is the gist on said nephew:
He's been diagnosed with Aspergers, ADHD, and anxiety.
He's very aggressive (kicks younger kids, flips off teacher, cruel to animals, slapping friends, flipping off his teacher).
He searches/looks for swear words in everything people say.

He is currently in 1st grade, at a public school. He doesn't really show signs of "remorse" about anything. He is in counseling (state pays for it; sister is a single mom) and they're experimenting with medication.

What else can be done? I am nervous he'll grow up to be a sociopath and his mom and grandparents seem very "meh" about it all. He's been evaluated by the state and cleared to go to public school, but it seems to be getting worse as he gets older.

The attention disorder wouldn't bother me. The anger does. Am I being ridiculous?

If you made it through this, thanks. I welcome any information/expertise you have in this area.

  • My little cousin has Aspergers. Before he was diagnosed he showed some of the concerning things you mentioned. Mostly the aggressiveness and violent reactions. He was a pro at kicking, biting, and stuff like that as a kid. From my understanding it's part of the reason he was diagnosed. He had to go on medication since it gets worse as they move into their teens and they can turn really violent and suicidal. This is all what my Aunt has told us about his condition. He is doing very well now. In the military actually.

The part that I would find concerning is the harming small animals thing. That does make him seem like he is showing sociopathic tendencies. I am sure your sister is really stressed out about this. You just need to be there for her. Hopefully they get your nephews issue's fixed.

    I know...no fire setting yet.

Thanks for your reply, Nana. It was helpful!

I agree with this.  Your nephew is exhibiting similiar behaviors to RAD (reactive attachment disorder).   I'm a special ed teacher and I've dealt with kids like this.  The lack of remorse and hurting animals are really scary.  I hope that there are no animals in the home.
