Re: Any experience w/ NEC??

  • I'm so sorry your little one is having to go through this.  I know there is a mommy on here who's DS had NEC.  In fact I think he just had surgery recently to get rid of his colostomy bag and is doing great.  I'm terrible with names, so let me think about it and get back to you on her name.
  • We did not have this, although the drs thought DS had it when he was 6 weeks old (it ended up being sepsis that manifested in his gut).

I am so sorry you are going through this. I'll pray for your son and keep your family in my thoughts. Please keep us posted.

  • crap I can't think of his name either but he is a survivor!

They thought DS had this twice and it was very scary.  In the end they figured it was when they up'ed his calorie intake to 26 becauase apparently it goes from human fortifer to cow and that caused his belly to bloat up and they had to basically pump his stomach.

I will be keeping you guys in my htoughts.

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.  One of my girls had NEC but it was a very extreme case where she had to have two portions of her intestine removed.  I don't want to scare you -- it is a very serious infection but most babies (I htink it's 85%) respond to the antibiotics and are fine.  Make sure your doctors are doing regular X-rays to make sure there are no perforations and that any inflammation that is there is going down.  You can read a little bit about our experience with NEC in my blog and the other mommy here whose baby had NEC is jennigator3 (I'm sure she'll chime in).  By the way, my baby has to have another surger in a few weeks but she's doing great.  I know how hard it is to deal with NEC especially because there isn't much infomation out there so if you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me - -teeveegirl-at-gmail-dot-com.  I'll keep your little one in my prayers.
  • Hi Wendy,

I have a lot of experience with NEC, I am really sorry you are going through this, it is a very tough diagnosis. All I can say is that if he does not need surgery, he may be fine. As everyone else said, make sure they keep doing x-rays to make sure he hasn't perforated. If he does, it's not necessarily time to panic. The surgery is done to remove necrotized portions of the intestines, if this happens they usually do an ostomy (either colostomy or ileostomy) to rest the bowels. My son had that and he just recently had surgery to correct it.

I hope he doesn't end up needing surgery, I will keep you and your family in my prayers. If you need me, email jenni.sachs@gmail.com anytime.
