Struggling w/ Baby Girl Name

DH and I are having some serious issues coming up with a name for our baby girl. The only two that have stood out -- Alexandra or Nadia. We've looked at countless baby name sites and looked at genealogy records for inspiration. Sadly, we have nothing that really makes us think it's THE name. I know many people tell us to just wait and something will come to us once she's born. BUT...w/ the issues we've had finding anything we're afraid she'll go nameless for weeks if we do that.

Where'd you find the name for your LO? Any creative ideas on where to get inspiration?

Re: Struggling w/ Baby Girl Name

  • My name is Nadia! I've actually known only ONE other Nadia in my life. I know many Alexandras.

I say Nadia, not because it is my name, but because you won't hear it very often.

  • Ha, you're bias! Totally kidding. You're right, though. It's not a name you hear often. DH and I really want something that's not trendy or extremely popular. Alexandra is pretty common, so it's pushing the limit on the popular part. Ugh, finding a name is frustrating!

  • Haha naming is very frustrating. But it's always a good thing to bring more Nadias into the world. It's so rare, and she definitely won't be in a class with 5 other girls with the same name!

  • Nothing stood out to us as THE NAME.  Not even after she was born.  We thought she would simply look like one of the names on our list and it would be easy.  Nope.  Our DD was nameless for a full 24 hours.  We decided on a name that was a mutual favorite and had family significance.  I had name anxiety for a few weeks wondering if we made the right decision, but now I'm glad we went with what we did and can't picture her as anything else.  I do wish I would have remembered to do a hospital staff poll.  It would have been fun to see what the doctors and nurses liked best off our list.  It may have helped us decide a little sooner!  I also know that there's a point where you just need to stop looking.  If you've exhausted all options, you may need to keep it to the few you have on your list now or you'll drive yourselves crazy.

  • Honestly, almost every name on my current lists came from being apart of this board. Some I liked right away and others grew on me.

My best advice for you is to be an active member of the board. By giving opinions and suggestions you can sort out names you love, like, dislike and hate. You will start to consider and think about names you bypassed before.

    I like Nadia.

  • For both our kids, DH and I got a baby name book (one of those with thousands of names) and scanned them independently, writing down any name that caught our fancy.

Once we both had a list of names that we liked, we compared notes, circled any that matched and crossed out any the other person said "absolutely no" to.

Or you could do what my mom did with my sister--they couldn't chose between 3 names so they pulled them out of a hat. They did it 3 times and each time the same name came out.

  • It will come to you! Just don't stress out about it too much. Not really a fan of Nadia or Alexandra but there is nothing wrong with them. Going into my delivery with my daughter Cora, she was nameless. Cora was on our list but not a total favorite. After meeting her, I knew it was fitting and fell in love with it.

  • You asked where to go for inspiration.  Consider movie and book characters' names.  This is actually where our #1 girl name came from.  I also like going onto nymbler.com and typing a name I sort of like to see what other names come up.

Since you still have time and aren't sold on either name, I would keep looking.

  • I love Alexandra!  Our names were family names so we didn't really have to look at sites.  Good luck!

  • Alexandra is very pretty.

DH and I decided on Caroline Ruth. Ruth is his grandma's name and we adore her so that wasn't a hard choice. Caroline was a name on our short list for a few years (I love names) and DH REALLY wanted to name DD Caroline so that's her name! We agree much more on girl names so we lucked out.

  • We are in the same boat as you!  Even with one of the names.  The top 2 on our list are Alexandra and Arianna.  But like you, no name just "clicks".  We keep looking and scanning names lists but nothing POPS out at us.  We have resolved that she will be named after we meet her, but we are afraid we still won't be able to name her!
As for your two stop choices, I love them both.  Of course Alexandra because it is a top contender for us Smile  I am almost 30 and have never met an Alexandra, so while it is somewhat popular, its not something I worry about her having 3 girls in her class with that name.  And I like Nadia also, its very pretty and this may sound funny, but I'm a huge gymnastics fan and Nadia Comaneci comes to mind =)
What we are doing right now is trying to turn to name meanings, and find a name backwards... the meaning first then the name. But it is hard... Good luck in your search!

  • We have actually drawn a lot of inspiration for names from movies, TV shows, etc. We would hear a name we kinda liked and that would lead to thinking of similar ideas. DS's FN is from a TV show and his MN is my late grandfather's name. I have gotten a few ideas from this board as well even tho I tend to have a totally different preference in names.

I like Nadia from your choices so far because it is much less popular but still very pretty.

  • We asked our parents for a list of names from the respective families (from years past).  We got a good long list and it was nice to look through with our parents and get a little family history lesson at the same time.

  • I really appreciate all the comments and I'm glad to hear we're not alone! I've tasked DH to start coming up w/ some names on his own (he's the pickier one) and then we can go from there. It's ironic b/c I just knew we'd have a girl, but we had boy names picked out. Go figure!
  • we struggled terrible and when it came down to it we named her Presley bc an Elvis song was on the radio (good luck charm) as we held her for the first time. her name is totally NMS but it fits her perfectly and i wouldn't change a thing!

plus its a super secret fact that after your DH watches you push out a baby you can pretty much get away with naming baby anything YOU want LOL
