Infertility

Those who have switched RE's or sought 2nd opinions

After our last three snowbabies didn't survive the thaw this week, we decided to seek a second opinion at a different RE close by. I'm actually really excited and hopeful that maybe this will bring us success, since the new RE has much higher SART scores than our old clinic. Our appointment is on Wed.

My old RE is in the process of sending over my files but I dont think they'll make it in time, so I've started compiling a list of our IF history (which is pretty easy since I just copied and pasted my Bump siggy, lol.) Is there anything else I should bring along or mention at the appointment? I'm trying to present them with everything possible, because I would really love for them to catch something my old RE didn't, and I'd finally have a reason why nothing is working.

Thanks for any input you can provide!

Re: Those who have switched RE's or sought 2nd opinions

  • We just had a 2nd opinion last week and will be sticking with 2nd RE.  Our 1st RE didn't do some testing they should have early on and we found out that I have DOR, so we couldn't trust them to make the right decisions anymore.  I would say go with your gut.  If you feel better about getting a 2nd opinion, it's the right decision.

Since you won't have your medical records in time, I would say that you are doing everything you can to be prepared by providing all of the knowledge you know.  Good luck!!

  • We recently had a second opinion and are switching REs for next cycle as well.  We did our first IVF in October and didn't have the best results (details in siggy).   He already had my record, but I had planned on asking him to go over my initial testing my RE had done to get his opinion on it, and to see if he would've done anything differently with IVF#1 protocol.  I also planned on asking what his next steps would be and why, but he had everything covered I planned on asking.

Definitely go in with an open mind and go with your gut.  I hope you have a great appointment.  It was nice to leave our second opinion feeling so confident moving forward and having faith in our doctor.  Let us know how it goes!

  • If the dr. doesn't get the file in time then he can always review it later.  Just for the details.  I hope that the new re works out for you!

  • Can you pick up a copy of the records yourself? When I switched RE's I asked for a personal copy and was willing to pick them up (although they ended up emailing them to me.) I sent them to two different RE's and arranged consults with both. I contacted the clinics and asked them to make sure the Dr. reviewed my history before I came, since it was rather long. Also, both clinics I consulted with had their own intake forms for me to fill out that asked a lot about history and testing already done. Does your new RE have that? Between the two clinics I consulted with I ended up doing several more tests not originally ordered by my first RE, and my husband did one. Unfortunately nothing new was found, but at least we were thorough. Best of luck. I'm really glad I sought some other opinions.
