Breastfeeding

My DD is a BF addict!

My DD turned two in October. My goal was to BF six months, then a year, then two years. I never thought we would still be going strong at 26 months. I just found out I'm pregnant, and now I'm afraid if I don't get DD away from the boob, that when LO comes along, DD1 will be jealous that LO is stealing "Mommy's milk."

What do I do? I'm at a loss. I'm very AP, so I don't want to just turn her away cold turkey, but I also don't want to be BF her forever. I still love it, she obviously still loves it, but I think all the outside influence has finally got me. It seems like we should be closing this chapter. Does anybody have any advice?

So sorry to P&R, but I have to pick up my kids from Art! I'll check back in a few hours. Thanks so, so much!

Re: My DD is a BF addict!

  • My daughter weaned at around 2 1/2. I even remember the weekend she officially stopped. We just got so busy during the days, plus my absences with the Army, even the bed-time and first-thing-in-the-morning sessions became not so regular until she just didn't ask for it anymore. It was kind of sad, but I had stopped offering probably when she started going to daycare at 18 months and refused any time she asked during the day. I would tell her that it was a special morning or bed time thing.

Do you always offer? Or do you wait until she asks? You could also use the story that it's going to be the new baby's turn. I wouldn't stop cold turkey, but slowly start to cut down on the number of times a day that she does nurse. Good luck! It definitely was bitter sweet, but after she stopped, I realized it was way past time to give it up. It was even sad throwing out my poor manual pump!

  • Most likely your milk is going to dry up around the 2nd tri.  When it does, she may just self wean.  If it doesn't, you can gently push towards weaning by offering other (more fun) things in place of nursing.

I have a feeling I'm going to be in your situation.  My DD is a boob addict. haha

  • My son was only one but he was a boob baby no doubt. My milk must have changed around 12 weeks because he was far less interested and weaned easily.

  • Thank you so much for your replies! I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. So, it sounds like I'm worrying prematurely and everything will work itself out. Thanks again!
