Infertility

Update on cycle

I went yesterday morning to a branch office to my clinic since I'm outta town for my continuing legal education credits. The u/s showed I have still only 9 follies after three days of stims. One big one on my right, but no additional follies. I was soooo sad and I sat by my phone all day waiting for my ivf nurse back in New Orleans to call me to give me my update. After a sad phone call to my husband, I pouted holding back tears. My nurse finally called and she said everything looks good and to keep taking my 2 vials on menopur and 150u of follistim till Monday and come back for a check in. This is my first IVF and my first cycle with any drugs. I don't know what is normal, but I keep seeig everyone have like 20 eggs while I only have 9 follies. I feel like I may not be responding well and why is my RE telling me I am doing good?! So confused. I just want this to work so I'm trying to stay positive. Ugh!

Re: Update on cycle

  • I'm still on my first cycle, so I can't give you a success story, but I can empathize.  I only had 11 follicles the day they decided to trigger, and ended up getting 7 eggs which, when I compared them to people in the teens and 20s seemed super low.  But you really can't compare - everyone's different, and everyone responds to the medicine differently.  At my monitoring appointments and after the ER while I was waiting to hear how many were mature/how many fertilized I just kept telling myself that it only takes one.  And even though I'm really pleased with my progress at this point, I keep telling myself that, because even if a bunch arrest in the next day or two, it still only takes one to get a take-home baby.

I don't know if for you IVF is something you'll only be able to do once, but it might also help to consider that everything they learn can help you get more answers for future treatments.

I'm thinking of you, I definitely get what it feels like to seem like you're on the slow end and everyone else is "doing better" than you are, and I hope that you're able to stay positive and that slow and steady wins the race for you. Fingers crossed that you get good news on Monday.

  • You're only on day 3, there's still a lot of growing time!  I didn't even get monitored until day 5.  I was on the same doses you were too.  It all turned out ok.  If your RE says you're doing good, I'm sure you are!  Good luck!

  • As PP stated, day 3 is really early.  I didn't have my first monitoring appt until day 7 of stims and had 11 measurable follies).  So try not to worry yet (I know, easier said than done) and trust your RE... they know what they're doing!! :)  (((hugs)))

  • I know it's way easier said then done but try not to be concerned.  Everyone is different and responds differently.  Plus, different protocols produce different results.  I was where you were a week ago and freaking out too but things change fast!  I agree with PP, your RE will tell you if he/she doesn't think it's going well...if your nurse said it's good then it's all good!
