Eve- negative reaction

Hi ladies! I need some opinions.  DH and I really like the name Eve.  The only person I told so far was my best friend.  She said she thought we would be crazy to use this name.  She said a lot of people will think of Eve in the Bible- the cause of all the world's sin and that it is a very negative name.  What do you think?  I don't want to strap my daughter with a bad name but I think it is pretty and feminine.  Thanks!

  • I don't know anyone named Eve, but there are at least three girls at DD's Catholic school named Eva, and it's never even crossed my mind that people who believe in original sin would have a problem with it.  She's also the mother of humankind, after all, so there's a very positive association to balance out the negative.  I think Eve is a lovely name.

  • My friend made this comment about my niece Eva too.  I thought it was a dumb comment.  People only say it because Eve/Eva haven't been getting more popular again until more recently.  I never heard anyone making this kind of comment about Adam for a little boy but that was only because they had heard it more and it had more associations for them.  Anyways she is the only one I have ever heard say this until this post today.  Lame.  When they know your Eve they will have something positive to think of instead.  I would never let someone's dumb comment stop me from using it.  It's a great name!

  • I agree with all the PPs, it is a lovely name and I can't imagine you'd get comments like that, or that she would. I knew an Eve in college and it suited her just fine. Plus, another PP made a great point about Adam- nobody would say that to him/his parents! If you love the name, and YH does too, go for it!

  • I have never even thought of the negative that went with the name. I always think of her being the first woman and mother to all.

I think you are safe with it FEW will ever think of the negative.

    *Taking a break*

  • I usually lurk, but I had to chime in. Our DD is Eve. We are religious and well-aware of the story.

1/ no one says that to Adam's parents, which is a reflection of the history of reading the Bible in misogynistic ways.

2/ Eve means life and breath, as well as mother of all living. That's a STRONG, vibrant name (Adam pretty much means dirt, FWIW).

3/ If we didn't use biblical names associated with ambiguous stories, we wouldn't use most biblical names.

  • Eve is pretty!

  • Yeah...in the Orthodox Church, Eve is still a Saint, so...no, I don't think anyone would say "OMG, Eve was the first sinner!!!! BOOO!!!" It's a great name, and FTR, in Orthodox tradition Adam and Eve were the first redeemed when Christ "broke the bonds of hedes", and that's pretty darn awesome if you ask me. It actually makes me want to name MY daughter Eve!

  • Eve is familiar enough so that people don't automatically make a negative connotation. I think your friend is overthinking it.

  • Eve is a beautiful name your friend is crazy.

My own religious views include God's desire to provide redemption for mankind so Eve AND Adam were an integral part of that.   There are a lot of positives to balance out the negative.  Also, every name unless newly invented (and therefore not a name IMO) is connected to a person who has done something wrong or evil, most Bible names even come from a person with a long history of bad as well as good.

  • I would not think that at all!  I am adopted and my foster family (the 1st 2 weeks of my life...this is not my name now) named me Christy Carol Eve :)  I was born on Christmas Eve and Christy Carol is like Christmas Carol.  I have always liked Eve.

I will name my daughter Eva.  It was my great-grandmother's name and I love it.  I really like Eve as well.

  • What?!? First off, Eve was not the cause of the world's sin, Adam was. It wasn't until Adam ate of the fruit that sin came about. I used to be a Sunday School teacher, so your friend sounds a bit off. Sorry.

As for the name Eve, it's beautiful! It crossed my mind because DH's name starts with E.
