S.O. signing credit cards

Has anyone ever heard the school of thinking that you shouldn't sign the backs of your cards because if someone steals it, they now know what your sig looks like too?

It's not why I don't have mine signed or have See I'D" written. That is just laziness. Maybe I'll go do that now.

  • Technically vendors are not supposed to accept non signed/"see ID" signed cards, the card isn't usable until your signature is on it. That said, before finding that out I always wrote "see ID" on my cards (and they all say that right now because I found out fairly recently) and nobody looked anyway, so it's pretty irrelevant. Don't leave it unsigned because then if someone picks it up they can make up your signature and put it on the back.

Stores actually aren't supposed to ask for ID, your signature is supposed to suffice (per bank regulations) which I think is total BS.

  • I hardly ever come across anyone who cares if it's even signed or not... Rarely ever do I even show my ID. I honestly don't think anyone pays much attention when they're checking you out.

  • I've heard it but I don't get it. Couldn't the person who stole it sign the card? Then they wouldn't even have to worry about trying to replicate the signature since it's their handwriting to begin with.

ETA: My H has "see ID" on one of his cards and sometimes it gets asked for, and he was told once they won't accept it, like pp mentioned. I think when his new card comes in a few months he'll just sign it.

Especially when you're tired and paid just above minimum wage.

When I cashiered I usually glanced at the back of the card. If the person wrote See ID they usually were the type who passionately wanted their ID asked for and I would indulge them. If it wasn't signed I would politely point it out to the person. Half the time they borrowed my pen and signed it right there.

  • All retail stores require that you have your signature on the back of your credit card.  It is the cashier who puts the sale through that she be making sure you have your credit card signed or she will ask for ID.   I have not signed the back of my card and when I had my credit card stolen the person who stole it just sign away.  I did report the card right away of course but when I found out that it was signed by the thief I decided I would write see ID on the back of the card instead of leaving it blank.
