3rd Trimester

Freaky 3D U/S

I went in for a regular 2D sizing U/S today at 36 weeks. The tech decided to take a 3D shot of LO's face, probably just to be nice, but I admit, I'm freaked by it. LO's nose and lips look huge and his eyes sunken - in DH's words, he looks like a bridge troll. Almost deformed.

DH is laughing because he says there is no way the nose could be that big and developed because babies aren't born with fully developed noses like that. But I can't help but be a little concerned.

Anyone else experience something like this and have it turn out OK?

  • this is why we opted to NOT do the 3D u/s, they look freaky to me!

  • Yeah, I certainly didn't ask for it. He just did it.

  • I have never seen a 3D u/s that looked anything other than creepy. I'm betting your kid is just fine. Those pictures are terrifying.

  • We did one really early, like 16 weeks, because I was impatient to find out the sex! OMG he was a freaky looking little thing!! I have the pictures, but in one I swear his face look like a baby bats! Since then we've hade several 2D and I'm comforted by the fact that I won't have a bat-like baby. Though the skeleton shots were a different level of freaky, I may never let him be a skeleton for Halloween ;)

  • I'm having 2 Ultrasounds done a week until he is born and the one they did last Friday his poor nose was so smashed and flat looking. The tech said it was because he is running out of room and had his face pressed so far against my uterus. The one a few days before that his nose looked normal. Poor things are in cramped quarters in there so they look a bit odd. I wouldn't worry, I'm sure you will have a beautiful baby without any troll features Big Smile

  • LO's nose was HUGE in the 3D u/s and I was so worried. She was born with an adorable nose. I think it's normal for babies to look funky on those.

  • Don't worry, baby noses are notorious for looking really big in 3D u/s!!

  • If you catch LO at a bad angle, they can look pretty freaky. In our video when we were trying to get him to turn we ended up with some pretty scary shots. He looked like one of the Easter Island heads, with sunken eyes and a huge nose, lol. I was a little nervous until he turned and we got him straight on.

  • Ours looked like an Avatar (the blue ones from the movie!)  I even pulled up some pictures online and he totally looked the same.  He now looks pretty normal, with chubby cheeks and cute lips...so they do turn out normal!
  • I definitely don't want to see her in 3D because I think every 3D picture I've seen looks freakish.
  • Those ARE freaky! Although I like the one of my baby much better than the ones of other people's babies. L!
  • Haha I doubt your baby will look like a troll! When baby is moving the shots do look creepy but I absolutely LOVE the pics I got in my 4d US! Got a picture of my baby crying and several angles of his face that we were able to se his daddy features and my features. If it weren't so expensive I would go get a 3d us every week just to see him!
  • Don't worry about it. I had to have an u/s at 38+ weeks with DD because I had been violently ill and my measurements were down. They wanted to check my fluids.

All was well, but the tech zapped her with the 3D for the first time. I was horrified. She was probably all smushed down there... I threw the pic away. It was awful.

And I know I'm biased, but I'll say it anyway since everyone says she looks like her daddy. My daughter is absolutely gorgeous. :-)

  • We did one with DD around 30 weeks, and she looked like a sumo wrestler. HUGE cheeks, very skinny eyes, and a large nose. While her first born pictures do resemble the 3D ultrasound (because she was pretty swollen after birth), the ultrasound was definitely exagerated.

  • DH and I both think that 3D pics are totally creepy! We have one of our LO & LO looks like a pig! Giant nose! However it is a joke now because DH is 50% german & 50% Greek. His entire family has giant noses. So we say that we definitely know who dad is!

  • 3D melted-wax baby pictures always look freaky to me. (If you're still worried, you could always show your doctor in order to joke that baby really needs to come out "nose first"... I bet he could confirm that everything is normal and that it's just distortion you're seeing.)

  • I loved our 3D/4D ultrasound but there were definitely a few pics where her nose looked so wide.  The tech said it all depends on how the machine waves bounce off the baby.

  • I had a growth scan yesterday and the tech flipped the machine to 3D to see just how big my LO really was (he was measuring in the 97th percentile).  I hate 3D.  They always creep me out, but I couldn't look away.  His nose was HUMONGOUS.  Seriously.  I wanted to cry.  I'm already paranoid about a big nose because DS #2 was really chubby when he was born and he had a fat pad above his nose (between his eyes) that looked like a second nose when he scrunched up his face while crying.  I hated his second nose, and even though I thought he was cute, I was so glad when he thinned out and that second nose went away!

Anyway, after the u/s was done yesterday, the tech gave me some pictures.  They were both 3D and regular 2D.  His nose looked HUGE in the 3D ones and it looks like he has a hook nose in the 2D ones.  Cue more wanting to cry.  I really hope it's all distortion.

  • LOL we did 3/d with DD (it was a new piece of equipment at the hospital so the techs wanted to "practice" on it and I happily volunteered!) and it was TERRIBLE!  She seriously looked like skeletor!  We got offered to do it with this one and DH and I both in unison almost yelled "NO!"  DD was SOOOO ugly on the u/s!
