Infertility

A late intro

Hello everyone,

I introduced myself on the DOR/POF thread last week, but not to the whole board.

Our situation is a bit unusual for this board. We are a samesex couple, who was originally planning on getting my partner pg first due to financial/career things mostly but when we met with the clinic the background testing showed up that I am clearly in the DOR/POF camp, with an AFC of 6 at the moment.

We are currently in the process of still doing the genetic and autoimmune diagnostics to find out why, but have been clearly told by the doc that if I even want to try for a pregnancy with my own eggs, we need to do it NOW. Otherwise we are looking at IVF with my partners eggs or just not being pg ever....

It's been a week since we got the news, and have agreed amongst ourselves that because the chances of it even working on me are so low, we will limit our iui attempts to 4 cycles probably with clomid or femera after the 1st or 2nd one. Then in March we reevaluate, and I grieve and move on haha! This seems very easy in advance....

I suppose in this I am grateful for being in a relationship where I have a partner who has a ton of good eggs seriously! Her AFC was 25! I nearly cried I was so jealous in that u/s room!. That little blessing is a bit of a silver lining in this for us...

But it's still hard. Afaik I am the only person working with infertility in my extended family's history, and until last week it never occurred to us it was possible... But finding out how my chances are of getting pg without ivf has landed like a ton of bricks!

Anyway, it's been a week and we are adjusting, and hoping and praying for a bit of a miracle and beating some severe odds on our iui attempts!

  • Getting that news sucks.  I am so sorry that you have to go through this.  After you adjust to the idea of if it does get easier.  I was devasted when I found out that I had all these problems, and then that I needed IVF.  But now that I am doing it, it is pretty exciting.  Good luck!  If you have any questions just ask, everyone on this board is really nice and knowledgable.

  • Yeah, I'm the only person I know of in my extended family with IF issues, so I totally get that "WHERE DID IT COME FROM?" feeling.  I'm sorry you're having to deal with it, but fingers crossed you've caught it soon enough that it'll be overcome-able!

  • : we had considered it previously in a romantic "our little queer family could be so awesomely connected" way...

It is possible, our fertility doc suggested it as well and my partner wants us to keep the option open for the future, especially if I am totally heartbroken if the iui attempts done take.

I am unsure though, ivf seems like a really hard process, and if we can get my partner pregnant faster and with less cost, then maybe it may be easier this way....
