My poor baby... Maybe TMI

My poor baby girl will be six months in a few days. She has been getting super constipated. She isn't really shown interest in baby food but drinks about 30 oz of Enfamil Gentlease a day.

She will go 3-4 days without having a BM. She pushes, but nothing. We give her prune juice per the doctors recommendation. It sometimes helps but by day three she has a super hard ball in there so prune juice doesn't help.

The doctor also has recommended a suppository. We've done that twice which gets things moving but then my husband is quite literally having to sassist her in getting it to come out bacause it is too hard.

We have tried to switch formulas but because of her acid reflux she seems to spit up much less on the Gentlease.

i know many people recommend feeding fruit but she is not loving baby food (oatmeal or veggies) that I hate to introduce fruits.

Shes been happy, but I just feel bad for her!! We have her six month checkup on the 13th but wanted to check to see if anyone had advice.

We went through this with DD#1...we put DARK Karo syrup in her bottles...probably a teaspoon or two in like 3 or 4 bottles a day per pedis suggestion.   Helped a ton...adds water in the stool to make it softer.   Best of luck!

Definitely try some fruit.  If it helps with her constipation then its worth it.  When my LO gets like that i feed her a few ounces of prune juice in the morning (1 or 2) and then pears in the evening. I cut out all the cereal and anything else that could make her constipated. clears it up within a day or two. but i do find i'm doing that once or twice a month. my dr. said its normal as they're bodies get used to solids.

also, someone on here mentioned the "p" foods to help keep things moving. so, pears, peaches, prunes, peas. i try to make sure she has one of those every day to try and help keep her regular.

Oh it's just horrible watching your baby straining just to push out a little hard nugget.  I hate it too.  DD loves solids and we feed her quite a bit, but I make sure she has either prunes or pears with every solid meal.  It has helped and she has a medium BM at least once a day.  I don't give her rice cereal anymore, but I do make her oatmeal (from scratch).  The prunes are easy to make too.  Just buy a bag of pitted prunes, steam/boil them until they are soft, and then run them in the food processor with as much water as necessary to get the consistency you want.  I freeze in ice cube trays, then store them in a ziploc bag so I can pull out a cube or two when needed.

We have had continued constipation problems with our daughter who is almost 8 months.  We do not add rice cereal to anything (we found out our daycare was doing this with her purees without asking me - and I have directed them to stop).  We give her pears, prunes, or peas to keep things moving.  The Karo syrup finally worked for us as someone mentioned above.  If she goes 2 days without a BM, we start adding the Karo syrup to her bottle.  It's frustrating that we have had to limit her introduction to more solids, but I'm willing to wait to avoid the screaming and straining of constipation.

I thought the same thing about offering fruit.  We, too, were having bad constipation issues.  I started offereing pears for at least one meal per day and it seems to work like a charm.  I also started letting him have a few sips of water after each meal.  Seems to have helped greatly.  DS definetely prefers fruites, but is now warming up to cereal and veggies.

I'd try the fruit.  Pears work great for constipation.  Or straight up prunes.

FWIW my kid ate fruits before he tried veggies and he never had an issue.  The kid eats broccoli like it's going out of style.

Same with us. Both my DDs started fruit first. They are great eaters with plenty of veggies and healthy grains. Pears, Peaches, Prunes, Apricots and Peas are all great to help things along. Until the constipation resolves stay away from bananas, rice, applesauce, white bread, and carrots (remember that puffs, mums, etc are usually rice based).

This happened to DS when he was 3 months old.  The doctor has us try adding 1-2tbs of Karo syrup to his bottle.  When that didn't help, they had us give a teaspoon of mineral oil.  Woweee did the mineral oil work!
