Today's pedi appt

About 2 weeks ago I noticed Stella had bloody mucus in her stool, so we went to the doc.  The doc said it was most likely a milk allergy and to cut out dairy from my diet and to use Nutramigen formula when I supplement.  She also said it might take 2 or 3 weeks for the bloody mucus to clear up.

Today was her one-month checkup and the doc (different lady this time) asked about the mucus.  I told her it was still there, and that Stella has been crying about half the time when she poops as if it were painful.  She referred me to the Children's Hospital for a GI specialist to check her out.

Stella is going through her 6wk growth spurt right now and started cluster feeding 3 days ago.  She is currently nursing every hour except for when she is sleeping. The doc told me to try to space out her feeding to every 2 hours and give her a pacifier in between (hopefully to alleviate gas/fussiness) and that I don't want my boob to be her pacifier.

I'm torn between wanting to follow the doc's advice because it could help, and wanting to tell her to take a hike because my kid is going through a growth spurt and needs a little extra TLC.

  • Medical advice and parenting advice are different IMO. This sounds like the latter.

  • I say let LO eat/comfort suck if she wants to.  It's good for her, good for your supply and good for your relationship/bond. I've learned pedi's don't always give the best advice when it comes to BF'ing.
