Anybody on here a workout genius?

I need help. Last night I decided to be Supermom and pick up my two boys so they could see the Christmas lights better. Both of their weights together add up to over 70 lbs, so of course I threw my back out.

This happens a lot to me so I am thinking I need to start doing some sort of workout that strengthens my back. I have very little extra time, so something that can be done at home and in short sets would be a plus!

TIA to anyone who can help me fix my gimpy back!

Why is that? I'm in generally good shape, it's just my back that gives me problems.

I have tried a chiropractor but I think it actually did more harm than good.

my husband has a lot of back problems. His physical therapist was able to tell him which muscle he threw out and which strengths he needed to work on to fix the problem.

Huh. This is definitely something to look into. Thanks!

Not a workout genius but as someone with back issues I can tell you that you need to work on total core strength.
Ab muscles and back muscles will help with the issue, it also could be with how you are lifting.
Planks are great for total core strength as is Pilates and yoga.

I might look into something like yoga. Thanks for the suggestions!

Yep, core strength is what you need to prevent most back injuries. When your core is weak, it requires your back to do more of the 'work'. For me, it's my lower core. Exercises such as hip lifts and leg lifts work this area: lie on your back, keeping your legs straight bring them up perpendicular to your body, and back down again without touching your feet to the ground and then back up. If that's too tough, start with one leg at a time...concentrating on keeping every other part of your body as still as possible and your lower back flat to the floor. Hip lifts: lying on your back with your legs straight and perpendicular to your body, lift your hips like your trying to push the soles of your feet to the ceiling.

Just a couple of examples, but if you have a back injury, I would recommend going to a dr and getting some PT. They can evaluate and target what you might specifically need.

  • Definitely core work.

Planks are awesome, but you need to make sure you're doing them correctly.  Whether on your knees or on your toes you need to make sure your butt doesn't sag and that your hands are directly under your shoulders.  Try holding for 10 seconds at a time at first and move your way up.

Leg lifts are good, but if your core is weak they might add to the injury.

    Thanks for the advice!

I used to be a rock climber pre babies so I had really good upper body and core strength. I wish I could find a fun way to work out again.

  • For my back injury, I went to a chiropractor who also was a sports trainer. He never once adjusted me until long after I was healed and the exercises he gave me were like magic when the disc flares up. You really should find someone like that. It was amazing.
