Baby Names

Popularity of Lucy?

Hi,

Our third (and last!) baby is a going to be a girl, and the only name that we seem to be able to agree on is Lucy.  I've seen a few posts here and there about this name, and I know it's rising in the SSA charts (#72 in 2011, slowly rising from #135 in 2007, all the way from #323 in 2000).  It was #58 in my state (Connecticut) in 2011.

So those are the numbers, but I'm curious for more qualitative input.  How many people here know a little Lucy?  Do you feel like it's "popular" or has the potential to become the next Isabella / Sophia?  That's what I'm afraid of!

Would love to hear people's thoughts... I'm can't decide if we should just settle on this name now or try to find something with less potential for becoming a top name.

Thanks!

Re: Popularity of Lucy?

  • I don't personally believe it will be a top 10 name, but these things are hard to predict. Even at number 72, less than 1 out of every 500 baby girls born in 2011 was named Lucy (if my math is correct).
  • I don't know any Lucy's and think its a cute name!

  • I can't speak on the popularity of the name, but I think it's classic and very pretty. I only know an adult Lucy in her 20's.
  • DH really likes Lucy, but I worry about it's popularity because of our very common LN.

I don't think that Lucy will become a top 10 name. Looking at the ssa website I'd imagine the rise it is enjoying now will peak around where it did in the 1890s in the 50s. If we had a less common LN I'd be more inclined to use it.

  • I think the name is really cute. As far as knowing Lucy's, I know of one.
  • Its definitely a cute name. I know a few new little ones named Lucy. My only issue with Lucy, and this is personal, is that I also know the same amount of puppies with the name Lucy.

  • I love the name. I know an adult named Lucy. Would definately consider it for myself but that's a family dog's name already. :(

  • Welp, I got one. I always check my children's names on SSA to see where they are at and though Lucy keeps rising, I haven't met another. Mine has always been the only one in play groups/class etc. I'm sure that's not the case in other places, just my personal experience.

  • I know of 3 dogs named Lucy, no humans yet.  I suppose it could become a top 10 name.  It has a cutesy/trendy feel to it, kind of like Sophie.  It'll take a few years though. It's #74 in Michigan, FYI.

  • I personally do not know any Lucys IRL. However, it is mentioned on TB a lot. It might have the potential to become very popular, but I don't think to the Isabella/Sophia status.

  • I know 2 IRL....one is a 7th grader and the other is my niece who is 4 months old.
  • I do know someone whose daughter (the same age as my daughter = 3.5) is named Lucy.  That was the only Lucy I knew of in real life until recently when I heard it at my kids' music class on a child who was visiting that day (younger than my daughter, maybe 2 years old).  When we first started thinking of this name (back before my daughter was born), I hadn't heard it at all in real life.

I am happy to hear a few people say that you don't think it will become a top 10 name... I am just so picky with girl names and felt like my daughter's name (Georgia) was the perfect combination -- (1) a name we loved and (2) low (300s) in popularity.  If Lucy was that low on the list, I'd be equally thrilled!!

  • While I do think that Lucy is the Sophia of dogs (including mine), I think it's darling for a little girl as well.

  • I LOVE Lucy!  I didn't think we would TTC for several years when we got married 2 years ago, so I named our cat we got that year Lucy.  Now I am pregnant and wish I had saved it in case I have a girl.

Even if it is in the top 10 eventually, it may take several years.  I say go for it.

  • I don't know any Lucy's. I definitely don't think it could be the next Sophia or Isabella. It's too juvenile sounding for me.
  • I don't know any kids (or people, really) named Lucy.  I have known a couple of cats named Lucy.  I really like it, but DH has vetoed it.

  • I personally know two - my niece and another unrelated little girl.  They're both under age 6.

  • I'm in the Chicago area and only know 1 Lucy for a little girl's name.
