Hello,
My LO just turned 10 months old and has had a few issues along the way, but luckily nothing really serious. He has torticollis, but it was pretty minor and PT helped right away. Because of his torticollis though, he developed plagiocephaly. That itself really isn't too bad anymore, and has improved after repositioning. His metopic suture had closed early creating a ridge down his forhead, but they expect that to correct itself as he grows, and xray's show all his other suture lines are open (radiologist did not go into any further detail). At his last Dr appt a couple days ago however, his doctor expressed concern because the suture line along the right side of his head seems to be very open, and it caused a pretty significant dip in one spot of his head. Also areas above his ear seem weak to his doctor. He is not sure if he's just being overly cautious, but he is afraid that should my son fall, he would be more prone to a serious injury. He says he really doesn't know for sure, so he asked me to have it checked out by someone who specializes in it. I've called our local Children's hospital, and surprisingly got a answering machine and had to leave a message. There is also a Hanger Clinic in the area, and I was wondering if they would be able to check his suture lines and see if it's anything to worry about. I'm not sure if they really specialize in that though, or if they really only do helmets. I wish my Doctor would have just referred us, but we do have his well baby check up later today, so if I don't hear from Children's today I'll ask him. Anyone have any advice or deal with this themselves? Freaks me out as he's now walking, as if that's not scary enough!
Re: Help w/ sutures and head questions
Hi Soph13F,
Do you mind me asking what part of the country you live in? There are some great doctors around who specialize in head and brain trauma that may be a good idea to consult with. I can find them out, if you would like to go that direction.
And, I am sorry that this is happening, but glad your doc is erring on the side of caution. I don't know much about that, and if he doesn't either, it is best that they don't just brush it off.
Good luck, and I am thinking of you!
If the metopic suture closed early, I would suspect he has Craniosyntosis and not just plagiocephaly. I would go for a specialist appointment?with a neurosurgeon ASAP.

Hanger just does orthotics (not only helmets, but artificial limbs, prothestics) and cannot help if there is a medical issue needing surgical correction. Please see a neurosurgeon or craniofacial surgeon as soon as you can.
